Six weeks in high country is going to be a lot of UV and very bright. I would consider glasses used by climbers with side shields for the extra protection. REI offers a number of models in varying price ranges.

I have a pair of REI glacier glasses with glass lenses that I got probably 15 years ago. High quality, but extremely dark. So dark they are not usable for driving in most conditions, other than sunny days on winter landscapes. Some people are more light sensitive than others, but unless you're extremely sensitive a more standard pair of sunglasses will be more flexible.

That's exactly why I get the $6 dewalt safty glasses (polarized).

That's also why I buy $50 watches (or cheaper if I can find them).
Have used inexpensive Casio watches for around two decades. Plastic band breaks, buy a new watch. Bought two for son to take west with him, around $9 each online including shipping.

Leaning toward the safety glasses, as he has to wear safety glasses whenever he uses a hammer anyway. Seems most are 99.9UV protective, but not polarized. Do I recall correctly that polarization is much more important on highly reflective surfaces, like water, than on ground?

Yes, polarization cuts glare off most surfaces, but especially water. Does not cut glare off bare metal, FWIW.

Like I said, I think the multiple pair of tinted safety glasses is a good way to go. I have various nice sunglasses but my $8 gray safety glasses are on my face more than 1/3 of the time that I'm wearing any sunglasses.

One of the tricks of finding the good stuff is actually being able to compare the choices. Some years ago when I was at the beach I broke my raybans and went to the sunglass shop to buy a replacement. So the sales lady handed me two pairs of sun glasses. The $90 el-cheapo and the $250 good stuff. This was maybe 10 years ago when a dollar was still worth 50 cents.:D There really was a big difference. Everything was clear and sharp like you were actually there instead of like you were watching it of tv. It helps if they will let you go outside where you can really see the difference. I still wish I could afford the good stuff.:D

I noticed they had some Serengeti polarmax drivers at Cosco. I have been having to flip my G-15 Raybans up and down a lot. They are great in bright sun but a I wanted to try something brighter. These are much less dark and very sharp. I think the sharpness is the polarization. They are unbelievable on a hazy day when the air is white. I haven't gotten used to the yellow/brown color but I hardly ever have to take them off. The Polarmax lenses are plastic and I don't know how they will stand up to normal use.

Hey Z-Michigan, MarkV...I also have a pair of those dark amber REI Glacier glasses. I have also had mine about that long, too. Those are the glasses of choice that I use on the boat when messing around on the coast. Worth every cent.

For my other sunglasses, I also have a pair of clear and tinted, Dewalts like what Sigarms described. I like safety glasses. It would be nice if they were polarized...

I had a pair of Smith polarized and they were really nice for about $125.

Had a pair of Revo's for about a year and they seem to scratch easily. They also are not as dark as I prefer. They were about $200.

I will maybe try some Maui Jims next as I've heard they are good but pricey. Right now I bought a pair of Panama Jacks at Walmart for $10 or 14 dollars. The optics are actually decent but the fit is kind of crooked.
