I have an old (very old) stump grinder. It is protected by two sets of 3 rubber discs that act as torsional protection. This machine is no longer supported by the manufacturer and I ripped one set of the discs apart. I have searched the Internet and local industrial outlets for a similar product with no results. Now I am wondering about installing a slip clutch to take the place of these discs. Anybody ever try something like this? Any suggestions on finding 1/2" impregnated rubber? Thanks for any help.

A slip clutch is a good option.

Not sure what the rubber disk arrangement is. McMaster has some reinforced 1/2" rubber. Pricey. Other sources may be flat belting(can you use 2 layers?) or tire material.

That rubber sounds like the right stuff. Thanks for that info. I will search their site to see if they have any big enough. Dimensions of existing ones are: 8" OD 3" ID by 1/2" thick with several layers of reenforcement. Although a pair of slip clutches would be just a little more money and provide an easier upkeep in the future with bolt in replacement discs. Thanks for the info. You have given me something to think about.
