Spitting grass trimmer

I have a 2500 Poulan pro grass trimmer. It runs and cuts great. After 4 years it has a little problem. The little vent in the center of gas "tank" cap is spewing gas all over me. It has never done this before. What gives? Can I just plug it? Any ideas gratefully received.

Welcome to TBN. You cannot just plug the cap ... the cap needs the vent hole to properly deliver gas to the machine. If you plug the hole, the machine will soon stop due to lack of fuel getting to the carb.

My guess is there is a rubber baffle in the cap. This baffle allows the cap to vent properly while keeping gas from coming out the vent hole. After 4 years, the rubber has deteriorated and is allowing fuel to escape through the vent hole.

You will need to get another cap and all should be fine.

Here's what I saw inside the plastic gas tank, two plastic "ports" One was attached on the inside to the fuel filter? by a short plastic tube. The filter was inside the tank (dangling in the gas) I'm guessing when I name these parts, the Poulan website was most unhelpful with parts diagrams. The second "port" had nothing attached inside the gas tank, no tube, nothing. On the outside it was hard to see where it went?:confused2:
Is it possible that a plastic tube going from this port to the vent in the gas cap disintegrated?
Thanks in advance. There is no Poulan dealers around and I tried calling their Customer Service and received only recorded messages.
I can order a new gas cap but they dont come with this (hypothetical) tube.

I think what you are seeing is all OK. There are 2 tubes ... (1) takes gas from tank to the carb (that is the one with the filter attached) and (2) takes excess gas from carb back to tank. On th einside of the tank there is only one tube. On the outside of the tank there are 2 tubes.

There are no tubes attached to the gas cap. So, a replacement cap will also have no tubes included.
