Found it in the old sawmill building i bought .not a spec of rust and a magnet wont stick to it .someone had been using as a drift .very very heavy for its size, lead?stainless?

300 series stainless would be my guess. Lead doesn't work well for drifting, and stainless flows well when whacked hard.

All my drifts are brass wouldnt this damage what your beating it on ?

Depends on what the goal is. :)

Driving a big seized pin out of a gear - do you want the pin out, or do you worry about marring the end of it?

Lead would mush out on top and bottom way more when hit over the years. We have many lead hammers, but no lead punches where I work.

Also, if it was lead, you could take a sharp item and scratch it pretty easily. Give it a try.

Probably a mix of stuff, stainless and maybe nickel.

If lead you would be able to shave a small piece off one of the burls.

Take a "slice" off one end and see what it looks like inside,
it looks like it could use a slice, before chunks of it go flying in your face.

Was it easy to cut? Or was it hard like Ni-Hard steel. I tend to think it is a wedge for splitting logs and was later used as a punch.
Well its definitely hard but my bandsaw cut it not fast
