Hi guys, I am building a dump bed for a pick-up with a power up gravity down system and I am using a regular cylinder. I will be installing a breather with a filter on the top port but was wondering if I can pour some oil in there to protect against corrosion. I want to pour in a small quantity, extend the ram and whatever stays in will prevent rust. Is that a good idea or will it plug the breather on the long run. Or maybe I can periodically remove the breather and spray some lubricant in there?

Crazy brain storming here: What about connecting a hose from the port, directly to the tank, but on the lower side? When the dump bed is going down, it will create vacuum on the cylinder that would pull the fluid from the tank. When lifting the bed, it would just go to the tank naturally. Looks a good rust protection method.

I doubt it would make any difference whatsoever.
Anyway, you can always convert it to a single acting cylinder by removing the piston seals and plug the port you don't need.
The simple breather with a squirt of oil, will probably be more than enough.
