I have been searching but cannot find anything on this. I am envisioning something like this:
Barrel Grapple for Reach Forklift | eBay
Obviously much lighter duty, and it would mount to a QA plate. It would give me the ability to grab very large rounds of wood to be able to get them into my log splitter when the splitter is set up vertically. It would be cool to be able to rotate the grapple to use it up and down and side to side, and maybe even used on the rear as a log grapple similar to a Valby or Wallenstein. Anyone have or ever see something like this?

Lots of interesting ideas here:

Those look exactly like what I was thinking. Very expensive but look very well made, also heavy. I can get blank QA plates and weld attachment points easily. I am just not sure of a cheap way to buy or make up the"claws". Any ideas on pre-made grapple arms?

I have yet to find a 2 arm grapple that is affordable that I could utilize for this project. It seems one could be made without too much trouble, I'm sure it would make for an interesting project anyway.

How bout a tire handler off a forklift. Stop in at a few tire shops that handle larger tires and see if they are selling or have one they dont use anymore. Modified one for neighbor to handle round bales once. He went to use large squares then which are much easier to handle.

I thought of a round bale grapple, but the rotating feature on some of the ones noted above would be pretty nifty.

I will keep an eye out for a tire handler, thanks for the idea. The rotating feature is neat, but adds weight and complexity. I was thinking of having the grapple part be detachable from the QA base plate. My idea was to use a trailer receiver welded to the QA base plate, then have the grapple mount to the receiver. This way the grapple could mounted in both directions. I am not sure if that much stress on a single point of attachment is a good idea or not.

On a somewhat similar note, I thought a good grapple for clear brush would be a vertically oriented grapple. Maybe be designed with three or four smaller pinch points acuated in unison with one cylinder if that makes any sense.
