REAL floppy disks (8 inch IBM 3740 format) had 251K storage and were single sided single density.

Probably more obsolete than button hooks for high button shoes.

well, from the laws point of view, once they are "fleeing" and are off your property you cant use the castle defense and if you injure/kill them you will be treated as the aggressor. in addition they could sue you for damages (they might not win, but with a crooked enough lawyer anything is possible).

Funny you mention those 8" disks. I had a dual drive set, back in??89-91? they were old iron even then.. I used an external floppy controller and 'driveparam' from ms-dos to make those things work. I got them from a salvage sale from UF along with a box of disks... useless devices.. but was a fun make-er-work project.

While I'm not advocating shooting a fleeing criminal..I would like to point out that some states have expanded castle doctrine.. IE.. it functions off your property.. florida is one of those states... if you are any place you can legally normally be.. then you can use lethal force to defend yourself...

It's about time victoms had some rights...

I bet it won't be long till usb and firewaire are about the only non video/audio IN/OUT ports on a computer..

On consumer PC's, you are dead on. On industrial PC's, you've got more than a few years left. Look up PC104, EBX other SBC computers. There's a whole 'nother world out there that a lot of folks aren't aware of. A lot of legacy stuff will be around for sometime to come.

The first removable disk I saw was about 14 inches across and was in the 25,000 dollar bracket for the unit. If I remember right the disk held a whopping 5 k of memory and we were so amazed

It is amazing what you can do with Industrial Programmable controllers. 15 years ago I worked at a steel mill a couple of years before I quit we put in motor controllers for some 750 horsepower motors. The old unit had all the servo loops in the controller ( speed, current, voltage etc) The new units did all the computations in the PC and then connected with the motor controllers with fiber optics so that it could handle the motors in real time.

Why would the average computer user here have anything other than a consumer grade pc?

in any case.. there are other applications where rs-232 use is still common. i have rackmount electronic gear.. new.. that still uses it.

My comment was aimed directly at the average pre-built.. box store computer... HP, Dell.. etc..

Great Idea i am sure they can be bought cheaper than front end weights and probably about the same weight.

Got you covered. Contains a program to compute electric bills on an IBM 1620. 1620 was cabled to an IBM 1401 for meter read card I/O and mag tapes.

In the late '70s, I did a payroll system for a remote site on a 3741 with those giant disks. Dialup connection to mainframe to upload results.

1 read a card (from 100 to 179 on a 1401)
2 punch a card (from 200 to 279 on a 1401)

with a little word mark here and word mark there
an early card read here and early card write there
he knows how to get the best thruput anywhere
