Just as a point of reference we have several older pieces of furniture that we have had recovered several times because they are built better than most of what we could buy today and my wife CAN NOT let them go. Just recently she had a chair redone with new springs and the bill was $220 plus the cost of material. If it is sentimental and good quality get it recovered and sprung. Just be ready for months of looking at little pieces of fabric if my wife were to get involved.

I think you got the right info from Tractors, The furnature I've done that had sags were caused by broken springs or the cords that tie the springs to each other being broken.
If the cords are broken each spring acts on its own and the suspension no longer acts as a unit.
