It was in the low 80s today and I'm driving down the road pretty much flat out. I look at the temp gauge and it's in the red. There is a down hill slope ahead so I put the transmission in neutral. I coast for about 15-20 seconds and I watch the temp drop quickly to normal. All fluids are up and clean. The radiator and screen are clear. Could the transmission be making that much heat? Thoughts?

Not sure about the transmission, I think I’d check the thermostat and make sure the water pump and belt are good. Radiator fan is worth a check too.

You are correct!
Turns out the thermostat was NG as well as the fan switch.
I replaced the temperature gauge with one that is easier to read and changed the thermostat. We were without power for a couple of days and our generator doesn't feed the shop so the fan switch was put on hold.

Good to hear, glad you have it figured out.
