Rounded off drain plug

What's in the transmission, walnuts? The last time I knew it held hydraulic fluid,which is oil.

Almonds, salted. Secret stash. The oil is just to help them flow out the drain hole.

Beyond the pipe wrench slipping off, is the concern on it simply scraping material away, as can be seen in the pictures. Compare the originally posted pic shown in post 640 with the ones I posted recently. Before and after using pipe wrenches. Leverage may be the defining issue though.

It appears that you have the leverage; what you are lacking is a solid grip. The suggestion which LouNY made could be the key to your dilemma, though. It also may be helpful to recreate square edges with a file or angle grinder first though.

Someone may have put thread locker on it at one time. By the paint matching with the threads tho it looks like it has never been out.

I have found that when I couldn't easily loosen a bolt that if I tighten it just a touch to break it free then loosening becomes easier.

I'm sure most know the best grip of a pipe wrench is not putting the material all the way in the back part of the wrench but closest to the opening. Cheap pipe wrenches do not grip like a quality Rigid pipe wrench.

The plug has been out before, none of the 3 drain plugs have ever gone in fully in the time I've been changing the oils. In this case the plug was over-tightened.

Has anyone tried the $15 Amazon Rigid pipe wrench? I need to add a few pipe wrenches to my collection and I’ve never had one made this decade. I really wasn’t expecting quality at that price, but I would like it if it is.

Meet Opie, the persuader.



Opie has been used over 25 years to bend things back into compliance. Hay rake baskets. plate steel, whatever. It's also taken out maybe 5 pan plugs that wouldn't come out any other way. Decent jaws, the right length @32" and long enough handle to get out of the knuckle zone. It's a Ridgid tool, made in Ohio.

Hey, there is an idea, use a nut cracker to get the drainplug out. . Nuts that that thing is still stuck. :rotfl: Get cracking !

If this is one of those European Fords, maybe you need a metric pipe wrench.

Did anyone ever ask if the op is left handed? He’s probably been using right handed pipe wrenches and adjustable wrenches.
