What's in the transmission, walnuts? The last time I knew it held hydraulic fluid, which is oil.

Almonds, salted. Secret stash. The oil is just to help them flow out the drain hole.

Beyond the pipe wrench slipping off, is the concern on it simply scraping material away, as can be seen in the pictures. Compare the originally posted pic shown in post 640 with the ones I posted recently. Before and after using pipe wrenches. Leverage may be the defining issue though.

It appears that you have the leverage; what you are lacking is a solid grip. The suggestion which LouNY made could be the key to your dilemma, though. It also may be helpful to recreate square edges with a file or angle grinder first though.

Yep, not enough grip.

Someone may have put thread locker on it at one time. By the paint matching with the threads tho it looks like it has never been out.

I have found that when I couldn't easily loosen a bolt that if I tighten it just a touch to break it free then loosening becomes easier.

I'm sure most know the best grip of a pipe wrench is not putting the material all the way in the back part of the wrench but closest to the opening. Cheap pipe wrenches do not grip like a quality Rigid pipe wrench.

The plug has been out before, none of the 3 drain plugs have ever gone in fully in the time I've been changing the oils. In this case the plug was over-tightened.

Has anyone tried the $15 Amazon Rigid pipe wrench? I need to add a few pipe wrenches to my collection and I’ve never had one made this decade. I really wasn’t expecting quality at that price, but I would like it if it is.

Meet Opie, the persuader.

IMG_7563.JPG

Opie has been used over 25 years to bend things back into compliance. Hay rake baskets. plate steel, whatever. It's also taken out maybe 5 pan plugs that wouldn't come out any other way. Decent jaws, the right length @32" and long enough handle to get out of the knuckle zone. It's a Ridgid tool, made in Ohio.

Hey, there is an idea, use a nut cracker to get the drainplug out. :D. Nuts that that thing is still stuck. :rotfl: Get cracking !

If this is one of those European Fords, maybe you need a metric pipe wrench.

Of course!!
In 650 prior posts, how come no one else offered this helpful suggestion?

Did anyone ever ask if the op is left handed? He’s probably been using right handed pipe wrenches and adjustable wrenches.

Because it was built before Europe went metric? :rotfl:

If you are left handed is it righty loosey, lefty tighty? :rotfl:
If you are in Australia and left handed, then does it reverse iteself back to righty tighty, lefty loosey ? :rotfl:

I would be VERY surprised if those little buggers would work on that plug.

LARGEST NEW RIGID PIPE WRENCH THAT WILL FIT IN THE AVAILABLE SPACE! PIPE CHEATER IF NECESSARY!
THEN...STORY OVER!!

Oh, so you have a set of these particular "Better Grip" wrenches with which to make such a assessment and, outright, dismiss their usefulness in this situation?

I do have a set of them and am confident, through experience with them, that the appropriate sized one (perhaps with a cheater bar) would work.

No, all mine were made in 60's or earlier. I dont have one that small. You just convinced me I need that.

Hopefully they aren't riding on their name.

I have a 24", 14" given to me by a friend that inherited from wifes great uncle and 10" inherited from my great grandfather. I took them apart, stripped, painted grey and replaced the heel jaw on them.

I ordered 6" and 8". Thinking about buying a 12". According to all the reviews ridgid pipe wrenches are the same now as they were.

My dad worked as a petroleum engineer for Exxon after leaving the navy. He had a collection of ridgid calanders bought from the ridgid tool man in the oil fields of south Texas. Oh man, those girls made bikinis look good! I could see how an industrial drain snake wasn't very appealing, but put those girls next to it, sheesh!

Hmmm... I thought it was "Tighty Whities, Lefty Loosey".

Why would you buy a set of those. Aren’t they supposed to be a one piece does all?

Nope. They come in graduated 'opening' sizes. Just like Vise-Grips come in different sizes.

The jaw (I guess you'd call it) is spring loaded... you can slide it onto what you want to turn or hold it open with your thumb, then release. To remove, you just lift it up/down/off. Really simple. (I like simple )

Edit: I found a promotional video... Yes, It's a commercial and you'll have to interpret the Aussie accent:

That’s a different tool and appears better then the one pictured here.

This thread prompts 3 ads for bathtub drains, but none for engines.

I agree. That's why I brought it up... and, I suppose, why TBN is such a great site so that we can share innovations.

I can attest :eek:ath: that these "Better Grip"s work as advertised and would work on the OP's rounded off drain plug.

Of course, the question is, "Are they available in North America?"
