Rounded off drain plug

Many don't realize that an engine will run for quite a time with no oil. For those that go back aways and into drag racing: I remember a race between Grumpy Jenkins and Don Nicholson. These were called "Grudge Races".Grumpy had a 10 second 67 Camaro and Don was driving a 65 Comet . For the last race, Jenkins drained all the fluids out of his car as he thought "Dyno Don was sandbagging as he kept beating him two to three cars before the "money race". Grumpy beat him by half a car for the last race and ran the fastest ET of the two cars that afternoon. Of course lunched he the engine but didn't care.

Had a friend the was flying cross country in an airplane with a 6 cylinder Continental. Lost oil pressure and was about 25 miles from the nearest airport. He didn't touch anything. About half way there he said he thought he couldn't wait to get back to tell his buddies how long one of those things will run without oil pressure. It eventually seized with such force he thought it might rip the engine from the airframe. He dead sticked into an airport without damage, except for the chunks that got thrown thru the cowling when the engine came apart!

Well, that plus the stains on the front seat cushions. :) That's a trip not many walked away from.

I also had a 6 cylinder Continental incident while flying.
My crankshaft actually broke in flight with engine parts flying about.
Other than flipping the bird over from landing in a freshly plowed farm field nobody was injured.
The poor aircraft however suffered considerably but after repairing was back in the air 6 months later.

Over the years I have seen a number of people that have aftermarket added "oil pressure pre-start" pumps. Before you start the vehicle, an electric pump pre-pressures the engine with oil so you never have a so-called dry start.

Pre and post lube cycles are pretty standard in commercial operation.

Why stop at 30 seconds. The more the better, take it out and get some work done while you are at it. :knockout:

(I know you were joking but could not resist)
When one makes an inane comment like mine he should expect to get poked in return. ;)

A couple guys at work have snapon "plier wrenches". Im not fond of them for pipes, but in this case I think they would work.

They are kinda like a cross between a pipe wrench and vice grips

12-5/8" Plier Wrench

Growing up, when I asked Pa how tight, he told me as tight as I could (and then would follow behind me and finish tightening), until one day when I broke a bolt. He told me that was too tight. Of course that broken bolt was in a starter on a 69 Pontiac Catalina station wagon that Pa had spend 2-3 hours wrestling a new starter into.

“Pa, you said as tight as I could and that is what I did”

I have the medium pair, and large pair. They work great as long as you have the room to get them to bite. They usually require about a 1/4 turn to lock in.

They are my go to for removing broken bolts where there is a bit still sticking out.

I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be as big of a problem if you welded it in.

I was told to tighten it up 'til you felt it start to strip. then back it off two flats.

And leave it for the next guy ..... :rotfl::rotfl:

At least if you break it you gotta deal with it.. :duh: :duh:

Truck is back home, head replacement, wiring repair, fuel filter, fun stuff. Took friday and the weekend off. Plan is to pull the tires off the tractor and get them settled, then talk to the shop down the road about welding a nut over the bolt and removing it that way.
