Rough Ground

Get a disk to loosen up the soil. With a small tractor, the size of the disk will also be on the small size. At first you will think the disk isn't doing anything and want to add weight to it. That's just a waste of time. It takes quite a few passes for a small disk to be effective, but in time, it will break everything down.

Then drag it all smooth. I have a large log with chainlink fence wraped around it that I use. Cheap and effective. The log breaks down the high spots and moves the dirt to the low spots. The chainlink smooths it all out.

Two acres will be a fair sized job, but nothing you can't handle if a few days.

Eddie, thanks. I am looking for a small disc. How do you hook up the log drag? Off the drawbar or 3pt?

I pull it with my draw bar.

I put a bolt in the middle of the chain to creat a loop. This keeps it from sliding through my draw bar when turning.

The other ends are wraped around the ends of the log, bolted together and lag bolted in. The log is oak about 18 inches. Good and heavy for breaking down the high spots.

Anybody have any pictures of these log drags/chain link fence drags. Sounds like a good idea.

Thanks-Sarge

I had the same problem, except the ant were fire ants (this is TX). Anyway, I found the best way to level a couple of acres was to invite my mother in law over for dinner. After dinner I quietly lassoed her, with the other end of the rope attached to my tractor (the drawbar, of course, for safety reasons) stomped on the forward pedal (hydro) and took off. It only took two passes around the pasture and it was perfectly leveled out. I found the action of her arms and legs flailing on the first pass broke up and re-distributed some of the harder dirt. By the time the first pass was complete, she was too tired to fight anymore, and her weight and size seemed to smooth and compact the dirt at the same time. A quick hose off when it is all done, and she was clean. My MIL, on the other hand, I just picked her up with the FEL and dumped her in the horse trough to get the ants off her.

Your wife doesn't read over your shoulder, does she? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What did you feed her for dinner? Seems like she might have been flailing a while longer if caffiene was involved. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My wife made a vow to love me. I'm going to hold her to it
