I have an overgrown field edge I want to hog some paths into. Mostly woody brush up to 1 inch or so diameter, up to 2 feet tall. I was thinking of backing into the stuff from the open field with the RC lifted a foot or so, tail wheel off the ground. Then going forward over the same path with cutter lowered to 8 inches or so. That would allow me to check better for rocks and stumps after cutting with higher setting before lowering deck. Any thoughts??

I cut that stuff all the time. Going backward is a PITA!~ I just lower the FEL to about 2-3" off the deck and go forward. Keep your hand on the 3pt lift lever and give a yank when it smacks something. No big deal, that's what they are made for.

Ditto what JB said.. I hate mowing with my mower up... lets all kinds of debri fly.

While I have backed into some areas and mowed backwards.. I usually just choose a slow gear and go forward and le tthe tractor front axle lay it all over.. Keep an eye out.. if you see a rock, stump.. car tire.. get onthe clutch and the lift.. etc..

Same advise as these guys gave you. Be more concerned about your tractor tires getting trashed. The cutter can hit all manner of things and keep on going.
