ROCK SLED IDEAS

I want to build a rock sled to move rocks way to big for my little girl. i have several rocks on the side of a hill i would like to move to the front of the property for landscaping. i have managed to chain a few down but im tearing up my creek crossinf dragging them across. Somone once said something on here about using a car or truck hood and that seems to be the cheapest /quickest way to get started. Does anyone have any experince doing this or pics of their set up? im sure i will have to find a 90's ,model or older hood and probably not one off a civic, lol.

I have seen a couple of pictures if old 1940s car hoods in use as rock sleds. as they turn up and are rounded well and also they are made of thick steel.

Build one like this, and you don't even have to roll the rock onto it:




With any "sled," be careful trying to cross a sidehill. The rock will want to roll sideways, taking the sled with it.

That's a very clever design, bcp.
Simple to make & use and just about bullet-proof.
Why didn't I think of that?

You can use a modern day car hood and a chain like I do they just don't last as long I hook the chain on the bottom of tractor so I can simply roll the rock on the hood with the hoe than drive off with it

cool idea, and would work great in some applications for what i am doing. unfortuantly getting that into position on the hill would be next to impossible. the rocks are partly burried and God has stacked them pretty tight up there. i have to first get them out of their position, moved down a pretty rough grade, through the woods, across the creek, up another rough grade, and finally to the pile. that skidder would work great for once they have landed in the pile. i will defiantly keep that in mind. that style will anilate my attempt to build a creek crossing with redimix and stone.

What about taking an old fuel oil tank and cutting one end and one flat side out of it. The remaining end is the rear that you chain the rock against (if needed) and you fasten a tow chain to the front side, which becomes the bottom of the stone boat.

Yep, when I was a kid we used a hood from a '58 Chrysler Imperial to skid rocks. Hoods with a nice ridge down the middle track better too.

You get a few 2 by 12's maybe five ft long. Bolt a tail piece of strong metal on to hold things together and then do the same in front except turn it up so it can slide over the ground. Put a hole on that front piece, hook a chain to it and start looking for big rocks. These sleds are also called "stoneboats" in new England.

Built a few that way. Today I might add a piece of that slippery plastic to the bottom if I could find some. Store inside out of the weather.
