Hey all, one of my relatives just bought some acreage and wants a service road of gravel about 1/2 mile long. What should one use for attachments to make the road. We have a dirt scoop, a loader, no box blade or other wide earth moving attachments. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If they can swing it I would be looking at 3 different implements.

First, a good top of the line rear blade.

Second, a good top of the line box blade.

For finish grading and maintenance of the road a good road grader-land plane blade.

If money is tight, then just get the good rear blade to start with.

Another thing that is very helpful when grading is to have Top and Tilt hydraulics on the 3pt hitch. Makes grading a lot easier and better.

Good luck. ;)

I think that Brian has just about covered it... :D

Of course, you could just "bring" the road to the site, too!

Lay down some road fabric "typar" and back the dump trucks up! You could do it all with your loader and a big CHECKBOOK!

Alot would depend on your terrain if you wan't to DIY then Brian is right on.
This will wind up being expensive if you need lots of new material and prep work.
I would recommend you get some prices from local contractors to compare.

Some times it is important to have a good vibratory roller to pack with, but you don't need to own it. Again depending on the terrain it may be better to have someone with all the toys do the job. Then you could have the maintenance tools.

The fel and a rear blade with gauge wheels may be all that is required.:)

But; having a loader you can utilize it for the work at hand. :)

Hey Akfish, I did not think of the road fabric lay it all on top method. Probably a bit quicker than most other routes, I would imagine.

i was thinking adding a box blade and the rear blade to do the minimum.

Oops; I had gotten the impression that you were working with a loader and not a tractor.

By all means get the rear blade and a box blade if you wish.

Nope, just a tractor at this point, and if the tractor does the job, then it will be a combination of existing attachments and some rented ones.
