That sounds like an absolutely great idea!

Too bad we can't have folding type of lights. You know like the mirrors on cars. Lol

Lights need to be seen from front and back which makes a big difference from swing away mirrors.

I'd mentioned earlier the idea of deflectors. Even something as crude as a 2 x 6 (actually 1 for thevfront and I for the backside). While the don't change the width . . they do protect the lights. Or what about slipover plastic covers.

I guess the other question for those that are having problems with their lights is . . . aren't the same branches that hit your lights the same branches that hit your tractor or you? ? My point is the lights are wider than the rops but are only a few inches wider than the tractor fenders or fel arms. Another way of looking at it is the lights are shoulder or head height of a sitting operator . . . its hard to imagine you don't "see" the branches. If I'm sitting on the seat and I extend my arms out sideways . . My hands are definitely out wider than the lights. Sure I can imagine trimming a little close to a branch when mowing once . . but to do it repeatedly with armored lights ???

Or is the problem that its happening only on the non-armored models ?

I'd previously mentioned another idea to make the lights quick attach/detachable because the lights are only needed on roads. Anyone ever tried a similar idea ?

It just seems to me this isn't some complex unsolvable problem that othervtractor owners don't have if they have well viewable lighting:

1. If you can reach out and touch the branch while seated . . you're too close. Too close . . Too close. Damage to paint or plastic or hydro lines or operator is imminent :)

2. Or put something over the lights front and back if you really want to be up close and personal with tree branches or ????

3. Make the tail lights detachable when not on a roadway.

4. Make the lights fold backward when desired.

I personally don't like the idea of putting the tail/directional lights inside the rops because it reduces the current excellent visibility they offer on the road.

AxleHub,

With the idea of having a folding type light is you can have the lights folded in when not on the road and when you are out on the road have them back in their required position. As for the same branches hitting that hit the tractor or me. I should have clarified that my issues come when I am in tight areas. I have even trimmed back the branches so I am not hitting the same branches over and over.

Ed . . alot of those lawyers are in state legislatures and federal congress. Because its a tractor and not a lawn mower . . Its law that they gave to be operational and viewable to oncoming traffic if the tractor is on any street or road owned by a government agency on any level.

Ooklaa could make his lights quick detachable if he'd like . . as long as he puts them back on when he is going to be on any road.

But we know ooklaa has a mmm on his tractor and that protrudes further than the lights lol.

I guess my point is an obvious one . . the lights are a surprise to no one. When we buy a tractor we see exactly where the lights are and how they are located. MF did a good job of displaying them and protecting them and its very little difference in width than other brands of the same size. The branches are the problem . . not the lights imo. So you remove or avoid the problem imo.

As an example . . this. Winter while clearing snow . . my bucket bumped a siding corner on the garage . . no big deal. It wasn't my bucket's fault or my tractor's fault . . it was the operator. Either I should have hand shovelled that little area . . or kept the tractor 6 inches away.

The problem I had was the foot wide strip of grass i could not cut because the lights stuck out so far. The ground sloped toward the fence and the light would hit the fence if I got any closer. I still say it was and is a poor excuse for a workable solution. If you want to be seen just get a magnetic strobe from Northern Tool and put it on top of the roll bar when on the road. Ed

The slope toward the fence was the same reason for my first "hit."

Just curiosity Ooklaa . . are you on roads at all with your tractor ?

Have you had problems with scratching or poking your tractor or yourself with these branches ?

No im not on the road alot. But safety is a major concern for me. The lights i bought are brighter then the stock units.

When im clearing my land and the bush is thick the branches are a perfect height to hit the rear lights. i dont really care if my tractor gets scratched, i bought it to serve a purpose and that purpose is for it to do the work while i sit in it. :)

Would it be safe to say you don't wash and wax after each use. :D I LOVE my tractor and while scratches and dents are not pleasant it sure cuts down on the tired factor at the end of a day by letting the tractor "work."
