I am in the process of rebuilding the engine in my 1970 ford 4000 3cyl diesel. It had a broken crankshaft. I put everything new in but the rods and the piston height above block was .028 to .038. I figured the rods might be stretched because of the broke crankshaft so i installed new rods and now piston height is .022 to .028 above block. Is the height okay for a .056 head gasket?

I would have to look it up, but I believe that is right. The thicker gasket would be correct. The rods would not stretch though.

Thanks for the reply Tractor Tech. A mechanic mentioned that the rods could have stretched and i didn't know what else to try

I would probably stay away from that mechanic...

Haha, yeah, stay away from this "mechanic". But if you do see him again, ask him how the rods stretch. I think we all want to hear this.

I know he has rebuilt a lot of gas engines. He mentioned it after i told him the crankshaft was broken and it did lower each piston about .008 but i don't know if that is enough. Thanks for all the comments
