Rear finish or MMM

Boss has a 21 acre yard he mows, uses a green tractor with a 15 foot bat wing finish mower. He says it takes about 8 hours to mow.

That doesn't look like its mowed with a finish mower,,,,,,it looks bush hogged,,,,,and you can run a 72" RFM On a 2920,,, or a 5' hog

It's mowed with the current owners TYM tractor in combination with a zero turn. It appears to be 60" MMM on the TYM. There were no other implements I could see around or on the tractor, not even a FEL. I agree. with most posts. The "Yard" in the most back section of the property is going to be let to grow. There is about 8 more acres behind that yard that is all hay. While I am used to rural living I am not a farmer nor do I have the experience to Hay or Raise cattle. Future plans are a nice horse barn and some horses. The upper most lawn gives the property a nice feel. While surrounded by mixed woods and Evergeens it opens up the back making it feel BIG and secluded at the same time. I'd like to keep this mowed. Doesn't have to be a gold course or mowed on 2 inches but at least walk-able and a good place to let the dogs open up. I appreciate all the comments.

You could advertise to lease it for pasture, someone in the area with horses could put a dozen or so horses on that and keep it eaten down nice for you. They'd have to throw up some kind of temporary electric fence, but for that kind of pasture I'd be willing to do a little work if it were around here. There's nothing prettier than a field full of horses that you don't have to take care of.

We get a respectable cut with our 6' Land Pride and 10'6" Woods DS1260. We use to use 7' and 8' RFMs, but quit as we had to go too slow and mow too often.

I'll look into leasing, however Im surrounded by Actual working farms so Im not sure what kind of market that would be. On the other hand i am 4 minutes from a big ski mountain so maybe some "out of towners" would like to keep some horses there.

Personally, I think your looking at too little tractor and and too small a mower....

Take a look at an L5240 or L5740 with turfs and a 96" rear flail mower with an offset....

Wow thats a big. I don't know if my budget is going to allow for that unless I find a nice one used...Why do you say go for the L series? Weight? Power? Or the HP on the pto to drive a 96" RFM?

I own a Kubota B2910.. It is the predessor to the 3030. It's a nice little machine.

The reason I reccommend such a large machine is because of all the factors weight, power, stability and the pure push/pull grunt power that a larger machine has.

You can get a smaller mower... mowing will take longer.... I think mowing with a flail mower will be faster than a rear finish mower but they weigh a lot more and they take a lot of hp to run.... a 96" unit will take 50hp . Also a flail will not bogg down if you let the grass get 12' high... 12" grass and a RFM is a no-go.


You will have a lot of open space out there and it doesn't look like you need a small machine.... and believe me a 3030 is small when your doing a job like that...

EDIT: Holy crap thats an expensive setup... I certainly would not be able to afford even that tractor at base. What about something like the L3400, or L39 with a smaller flail mower?

Sure they would be good choices.... When you step from a B to an L it's a whole lot more machine. Unfortunately it's reflected in the prices.... Maybe there are some good deals on repos through Kubota credit....

Great view.
It's philosophical here but everyone at some point in life needs to mow more than practicality would dictate if for no other reason than the life experience.

Repo's huh? Im seeing a lot of used L3400's. There no 52 horse but there also a little bigger than the B could offer. There are some larger models used...But used is used..

A repo is likely to be newer and may be low hours.... This is a buyers market so just don't buy anything that your not 100% happy with...

I would try contacting Kubota Credit....

In the end you can actually mow those fields with the 21" push mower... You wouldn't want to do it, but the other end of the spectrum is a 18' wide batwing mower...

The answer is somewhere in the middle, and like all the rest of us will be dictated by available budget.

I think you'll want a machine that weighs in at more than 3000 lbs, 35 to 50 hp has a loader that can lift in the 2000 lb range... and don't forget a suspension seat....

Thanks, Chris. I never thought about repos. Ill check into it with Kubota credit. You are very right on your spectrum. I have a debate now between new vs used. With the 0% financing new is attractive, however I can get a lot more tractor used with low hours and only a year old. I like the idea of the flail mower and am going to look more into that as well. Right now, It's winter, so I have time to figure it out. I may just let the lower yard of grass grow out.
