I still open and hold the door for women, most seem to appreciate it, those that don't I just shrug my shoulders
then p them off with, "whatever blows your skirt up" and just walk away.

Open a door for many women and you will find there are no roses to smell. What used to be common courtesy has become a sexist act.
Can't say as I've noticed that. I don't rush ahead of someone to open a door, but it just seems polite to hold it for someone behind you, regardless of gender.
Been married quite a while now, but when I was single I don't think I opened a car door for a date since the early 70s, figured she was perfectly capable. No one ever complained.

Well getting off the thread subject here but what the heck,
I almost always open the door for my wife and then close it after she is in.
I've only been married to this one for going on 7 years, I ran single for over 20 years
after my divorce from my first one and I have always opened the doors for my dates,
and often for any female friends or acquaintances it is just a gesture that I was brought up to
believe in doing.
Besides which it gives me a good opportunity to check out the view from several perspectives. :D

And so much of this is highly personal. I've always been around strong independent women who aren't going to wait for a man to open a door or throw his coat over a puddle for them, and indeed would likely be put off by someone who expected this. My mother, sisters, first (RIP) and current wife are all this way. Not women's-libby but just strong and capable. I find those traits quite attractive.

Really sad, but probably true. I still hold the door for anyone. It is interesting, but it seems like men say thank you, or a smile or nod more than women. Anymore it seems like they think you might want something. Maybe men do - a smile would do. Even more so when you show courtesy when driving.

Really depends on where you are. I hold the door at restaurants all the time for folks going in or out. Always get a thank you, and I make sure to thank the person if they are holding the door for me.

Same here. I always hold doors open no matter who is behind me. The older the person I hold the door for, the more likely they will smile and say thank you. I don't care if they do or don't, life is too short to think twice about it.

If you're holding the door for the "thank you" response, you are doing it for the wrong reason.

Unfortunately you're right. I throw a wrench in that by holding the door regardless of sex :), you wanna see someone look at you weird try that sometime LOL.........M
I do that all of the time, and always have. I used to think that it was common courtesy.
