RANT New "safety" gas cans?

That's good to hear Moss. 40 plus years out here and NEVER had water or crud in either fuel - gas/diesel. I'm just super careful with fuel storage - borderline ****. There is just no question about my use of the Jerry cans - soon I WILL have to get help in filling the tractor. Small electric fuel pump.

Filling the M6040 is not just a simple matter of lifting full cans of fuel. Lift - then lean forward to get the nozzle into the tractor fill pipe. Further complicated because I always have some implement on the 3-point.

Probably a good idea to find some type of small pump now. Before I drop a full can and some body part get hurt/injured.

This is the one I have. It almost pumps too fast for small things like lawnmower, log splitter. But my machine has a 5 gallon tank that I never take past 4 gallons. It'll pump 4 gallons in around 3 minutes. Takes D cell batteries.

I try to keep my diesel cans full, when the tractor needs fuel I empty a full can into it. My gas cans are a little different, nothing I have can take a full five gallon can in one shot, I keep them full over winter for emergency purposes, I treat each one with stabil.
Rented a medium small track hoe a couple of years ago, guy dropped it off with a full tank and a full 5 gal fuel can. Condition was fill the hoe from the can when I was done and top up the can. Wanted to use his fuel can so no contaminated fuel would get into his machine. I emptied his container into the hoe, then I noticed the mess in the bottom of his container! I told him about it, he was a bit surprised and embarrassed.

I have a couple 5 gal diesel fuel jugs like that, they work much better once I ripped the red part off of them. Still flow very slowly though.

I buy this style gas/diesel can. The nozzle has a good cap, and the button releases gas when and how you want it. The short nozzle means you probably need a funnel to fill your car, but it works great with a tractor or riding mower.

I have 2 ea WWII surplus Jerry cans I inherited from my Dad that still work great for storage, but like Oosik, have difficulties getting the diesel out of them into the tractor. I used to have flexible spouts but they developed pretty severe leaks I have never seen replacements available. I had a battery operated pump similar to what Moss presented but it was cheap and flimsy and the battery was seemingly dead whenever I wanted to use it. Now the Jerry cans are a backup as a siphon hose is the only way to get fuel out without difficulty

For the tractor diesel I use a large funnel with a tight brass screen. I can just pour out of the can with no nozzle at all, and the screen catches a surprising amount of crud.

We use these for 2 stroke fuel but what you must be carful and what I don't like about them, is they can't vent any presure if they are allowed to warm. They will blow up. The steel eagle can lids are spring held down and will vent if pressurized.

I have 4 of these...2 for gas (a 5 gallon and a 2.5 gallon), and 2 5 gallons for diesel.
If I see them starting to bloat, I just hit the pour button to vent
FYI, I don't leave any of the cans outside or in direct sunlight

I do not like to store diesel and gas inside my buildings. So they stay outside in a hutch, off the ground. But critters chewed the vents off them. Still using whatever old plastic fuel cans I had before this new style safety cans. Both my Kubota B26TLB and dad's JD1070 are a pain to lift the cans to shoulder height to fuel. His I can stand on rear 3 pt to fuel, mine I have to use a stepladder against loader arms. Not pretty either way. Jon
