Breaker was not off. It was all together and when I was shoving the wire it pulled out of a wirenut. I then managed to ground with my fingers. At that point I knew the thermostat must have been working.

Not sure if you have re-checked the last things done prior to the start of your problem. I have found on several occasions that wire nut connectors sometimes do not make contact with all of the wires, especially with stranded wires mixed with solid wires. I twist the strands of stranded wires and solder the exposed tips making them rigid so they work better when joined with solid copper wires in wire nuts.

BB TX & Bob reves are correct on this one more than likely one leg of the 2320 is loose someplace. the diagraham is great there BB shows exactly what has to have had happen... check in the OWRKING heater for the bad connection. they may be in parrallel ckt.
