Anybody have any exprience w/ a pto driven air compressor?

I saw one in Northern Tool and it seems it could be pretty useful.

Do they have enough capacity to do much w/o a significant reservoir?

Thanks guys.

i was wondering about this compressor also, anyone have one?

I bought one from Northern Tool. I have used it a couple of times. I have a air powered limb clipper. It worked fine with it. It is very simple to use.

how do they deal with the pressure buildup since the pto would be running continuosly, whereas an electric compressor turns off when the pressure is reached, do they just use a relief valve with a high flow rate or do they have and unloading valve like they use on gas powered compressors? i have been thinking of rigging up a compressor head to mount by the 3pt and run off the pto but i gota figure out how they regulate it

Not sure how they do it but the compressors I have seen that run constantly have a modulating valve that either unloads extra air or kind of free wheels when the pressure in the receiver reaches set point.

I think some of the Zetor tractors come with an air compressor on them !

This is a neat idea, but the flow rate is on the wimpy side.
You won't be running a 3/4" impact off that compressor effectively.

I wonder how much more costly a pto compressor designed to run off a tranny pto for a truck would be, and if it would work on a tractor.

An old thread, but found interesting.
Does that Pto powered air compressor you mention look like this? (see attachment)

If so, it has a two-sided very simple piston operating linearly. That piston is driven at its middle section by the pto. Air is sucked into the cylinder from one side and pumped out from the other side of piston head. Since this pto compressor doesn't have an extra air chamber to keep the air flow continuous you can't use it for painting purpose. Can be used only to inflate the tires. But, a small extra air chamber can be made easily when making the model casting. Then, it can also be used for painting as the air flow will be more continuous (no flow interruption).

Wrecking yards drive their air impact wrenches using an air conditioning compresser, belt driven off the motor. Seems to work well and they have an unlimited supply of them...
