PTO Chipper vs Tow Behind Chipper

That should be a good chipper for you. Usually - a larger chipper means a heavier fly wheel. Heavier fly wheel will give smoother operation.

If you are chipping green material with lots of sap - freshly cut pine trees - you DO need a larger chipper. Larger chipper will give higher air flow and clear the chips.

I did have trouble with the discharge chute plugging when I had the Wally BX42S. The chute would become coated in pine sap and the air flow could not blow the chips out this chute. Quick fix for this - have some dry wood to put thru to clear the chips and sap. Long term fix - fell the trees and drag to piles. Let them sit a year and chip then.

When I let the small pines sit a year - absolutely no problems with plugging.

So...... my bottom line. I've had both - stand alone and PTO chippers. I stayed with the PTO because - with the Kubota M6040 I have around 50 PTO Hp behind the chipper - one less engine to maintain - easier to get around in the woods with a chipper on the 3-point. AND any equivalent 50 Hp stand alone chipper is well beyond my financial means.

My experience with chipping is somewhat different than mikester. I thin my stands and drag all the downed pines to many piles. THEN - I begin chipping. I will chip for ten to twelve hours every day. Take a break every hour or so and rehydrate. Chipping will be all done in less than a week. The entire process - less than ten days.

Some times are easier than others. My son and his friend will, occasionally, drop by and give a hand.

This is how I thin my stands and chip 800 to 1000, or more, small pines.
