Tractor
5045d
Hello I posted this on another thread the other day but want to start my on. I tried to start a lady's tractor the other day
here in Bryan tx it's a 5045 d. It was about 45 degrees and was really hard to start. I've driven it in the summer starts and runs great. Yesterday I started trying to figure out how to preheat but got nothing so I started searching the net and it lead me here.
I've tried pushing the key in on run no joy from search looks like that's a option the intake preheat. I don't see how they would send a diesel out without something on it for cold starts.
Looks like from what I've read everybody likes the coolant heater better than the block heater or intake preheat.
How does the coolant heater work once you plug into 120 electric ? Does it circulate the coolant while its heating it ? I want to install the best thing for the lady.
I'm going back to her place to look for the block heater or coolant heater or intake preheat now that I know what I'm looking for.
Ok I have since decided there's no preheating on the tractor so I went to jd here in Bryan and looked at the intake preheat setup it was 122 without tax. No colder then it gets here that's what I will get for her.
Right now one of her horses has a eye problem and her border Collie dog had his hip dislocated while working cattle so I'm going to wait for her to get over some that other stuff.

Is 40's the usual cold there? If so, the in line air pre-heat should be sufficient and the quickest method, no need to plan and plug in hours ahead of time. Although block heaters and coolant heaters take much longer, heating the block and oil is much friendlier on the motor. But with good oil, I doubt it makes difference over life of motor. In the meantime, until you decide on which, some people here would suggest using her blow dryer to heat the intake air.
I went with the block heater and preheater. Use both when it's below 35-40 ( depending on how much pre-planning time I had), but just the preheater if it's above.

It can get in the high teens but not for long and not this yr.

Check to see if someone has disconnected the thermistor at the thermostat housing or loosened the connection at the pump. They control the cold start advance on the pump. These often fail and cause the fuse to blow that powers the shut off solenoid, causing a no start situation, so the simple solution is to disconnect them.

I have read your comments added to the other thread and peoples responses. My tractor also has the 3cyl engine. I have installed the coolant heater, leaving it plugged in for 1 hour and an outside temp of 30 it will warm the engine up about half way. Looking at JDparts the heater is the same, but the installation location is different.

I use the JD fuel additives, there is a winter ty26787 and summer ty26784. I included a link at the bottom. Since using the additive, NO smoke at startup and literally just a flick of the key to start. Both are cheap in cost and suggest trying them. I have no experience with other brands. Leaving the range as well as the gear in neutral it starts up easier. Have you checked the fuel filter to insure there is no water in the fuel. For me with the fuel tank full and filling the filter with fuel before putting on, I have never had to bleed it to start it.

Your other post indicated it starts hard even when warm outside, if I recall correctly. If I recall correctly, there could be a fuel delivery problem. I believe this tractor as mine has no fuel/transfer pump. So a hole in the fuel line, filter needing replaced, tank not venting correctly try leaving fuel cap off and looking at JDparts there is a straining at the fuel tank part # SJ10012.

You might look at greenfarmparts.com for parts and sometimes they have sales.

I second Tractorboy88 suggestion. I have included a picture thermostat

I would start with the simple things before attempting to change the timing.

Here is a link to operators manual, if you needed to see it.

I live near navasota with my 5055. It'll start quick and easy at 30-32. If you turn the key on, and then push it in, you should hear the buzzers quiet down a little as there is a draw on the battery. I don't know what it's heating, but it does smoke a little less than not using it. Check the condition of the battery.

It does not have the preheat when you push the key in , the key will push in on run but does nothing because it's not there , I went to jd and they pulled up the a picture of the preheat kit so I know what it looks like and it's not there. I will check the other stuff on the pump your talking about. It may be the weekend before I get there.
When I say it starts easy in warm weather I mean 85 and above . I only drove it last summer a couple of times before now.

Jd5210 posted a picture of the advance sensor . Is that what your referring to ? If the fuse blew where would that fuse be ? I saw the fuse block for the tractor but do not remember a advance sensor fuse.
