This was in my local paper last week. The article is in French, but the details are:

- gas powered
- can be attached to an ATV or lawn tractor
- replaceable/extendable cutter blade
- 42" swath

I had a chance to see it at the Huntingdon fair - looks neat. He's only made one and estimates the selling price to be 3200$ CDN (that's way too expensive, in my opinion - maybe the price will be re-evaluated once it actually hits the market).

I thought it would be of interest to those looking for a large edge trimmer, or even something to cut small amounts of hay.

To cut small amounts of hay you could get a used disc mower for about half that. Sure it may needs some work, but you could buy and rebuilt it for that cost and then have a 8' mower.

Good idea but way to pricey.

I agree, assuming you have a tractor with a 3ph and PTO.

Fred, You are right on target--We have about 30 used 6-7 sickle mowers that we have rebuilt in our shio that are for cat 1 three point hitch starting at $395 for pitman type up to $995 for a 7 ft NH belt drive machine--Ken Sweet

Ken,

What has been your expereince with the reliabiliy of used disc mowers versus used sickle mowers?

Forget used disc mowers !!---Only exception would be a purchase from a estate, If the mower was less that 2-3 years old was was working fine when the gentleman quit using it. Purchasing used from a dealer would only work if you could get a 30 day warranty and then run the heck out of it and see if it will hold together--Note: In any event, never pay more than 1/4 the cost of new for a used disc mower--Ken Sweet

Ken,

That was my thought as well. A lot of the used disc mowers appear to have been traded in for a reason. These things run at such high speed and are fairly complicated.
I suppose if you are very mehanically inclined and could get a deal on one it could be worth it. But you would probably need to plan on buying parts for it. I have seen 7-9' used ones for 1-2K.

It seems that the sickle mowers are less complex, and since they operate at much lower speeds more likely to last a while even when purchased used.

For ocasional use a sickle would be fine, but for large amounts of hay the higher speed of a disc sure is nice.
