Would you use 2"x4"s or 2"x6"s for roof perlins? I have some people bidding 2 x4 on 24" centers for the roof and one other guy is bidding 2x6 for the roof and 2x4 for the walls. Now 2x6 sounds like it would be more substantial, is it a good idea? Trusses spaced 4' on center
Also, some are bidding 6"x6" poles and others are bidding 4"x6" pole.

I just got done building a 30-40 pole barn. my roof perlins are 2x4 24 inches on center. They are quite sturdy and never saw the need to upgrade to 2x6's/ honestly. My old pole barn we built were 2x4 on 2 foot centers as well

What spacing is your framelines?

8' oc we use 2x4 purlins and 2x6 girts.

The guy bidding 2x6 purlins has 6x6 posts spaced 8' with the trusses spaced 4' on center.

Depends on what the roof pitch is too.

As well, it depends on the grade of the 2x4's and the 2x6's.

Also, what deflection is tolerable in the future?

There are a number of inter-acting variables in your decision.

Use trusses on 24" centers, and forget about the purlins.

If at all possible make it bigger. If money allows and space allows go larger. I was just talking with someone yesterday about this. He built a 24X28 garage, hind sight he said he should have made it bigger and taller for attic storage.

Just my humble opinion. Good Luck!

I agree...this project started out as a pre fab 12'x18' shed grew to a 24'x32' pole barn and due to money and where we need to put the building settled into the 24'x24' project we have going now. :)

I'm in the middle of getting bids as well. I have 6"x6" pole with 2"x4" prulins. Both roof and side nailers. Trusses will be 2 o.c. because I'm having an open span Grambrel roof installed.

I have 24" OC trusses with no roof purlins. 24" OC wall purlins on 6x6 8ft OC posts. 2x12 boxed headers holding the roof up.

24' x 24' x 10' 6" with 6/12 roof pitch. Steel roof and wall.

The only thing I would note here is that if you ever have to get up on the roof, make sure you use a teather. Mine is 5/12 and even with a light dew it is very slick. I came off it once while building it. Now I won't get on it without a teather.

I built a 32' x 64' last year with 4' truss centers, 8' post centers and 2 x 4 purlins. The roof feels fine when I was walking on it to put a chimney in. The only thing I would reccomend was going to 1/2" sheathing rather that 7/16" if they are quoting that. Not sure of the code where you are, but here you need roof clips with the 7/16" and not the 1/2" (But I put them in anyway):D
