I have been reading through the threads and have found a lot of good information, thank you all. I recently purchased some property and it has a 32 x 40 slab already poured. It appears that it is a 6" slab without a footing. I am wondering if I can put up a pole barn on this slab some how. What kind of post anchors would I use. Would the weight of the building crack the slab? Should I pour a footing around the perimeter, or just sink the poles in the ground around the outside of it. I really dont want to bury the poles as I have seen lots of fence post rot off. Any and all suggestions welcome.

I had a very simular situation when I bought my house. There was no garage but there was a 30'x24' 6" pad. I checked with building dept. to see if I could just frame a garage up on this pad. They said as long as I had an engineer approve it. I figured it would cost too much to have an engineer come out and not want to take the chance to put his name on it. Because I wanted it attached to the house, I had two options. 1) dig a footer all the way around the pad to build on or 2) put in sonnet tubes and attache the poles to them using post anchores. I went with #2. I made the garage two foot wider and longer (one foot all the way around). This way I could put the tubes in with out messing with the existing pad. After the garage was built I filled in that one foot between walls and pad with concrete. Hope this helps.
