Sometimes it works to the buyer's advantage if he knows more than the seller. Back in the days of kick-start motorcycles if the seller was having a hard time getting it to start ...

"You realize each kick takes $200 off your asking price!" :D

And some with questions:
100_2296.jpg

Do the wheels seem overly canted or is this standard?
100_2286.jpg

What is the right button here?
100_2288.jpg

Is this a three position switch? I thought it would turn left to warm the glow plugs but it doesn't seem to rotate that way.
100_2285.jpg

This is the dip stick from the gearbox does the color seem wrong on this oil? If so what would cause it?

Overall the coolant and oil don't seem bad (oil seems really well used and black but otherwise ok)

No Looks standard IMO.

Hahaha The Horn.

Yes. Turn It to the left should Ignite your Thermal Start.

Looks Milkey Prob. need to change the hyd. fluid and clean the Screen.

Cool thanks for the answers so far guys. Any idea why the key doesn't seem to rotate left? I am hesitant to try to hard as I don't want to risk snapping it.

Someone has prob. replaced the Ign. switch. The thermal start is in the pic. My Blk. bulb is Diesel fuel. If your switch was hooked up turning it to the left gives the blue wire power 12V. The heat opens a check ball and lets the fuel drip in and ignite creating heat. If the Thermal is there just run a wire from your Battery Pos. to give it power. Don't leave it hooked up for more than 10 sec. so you don't burn up the TS. Igniter.

I must not have TS then, all that is where the bulb should be is a stud.

So is there any way to warm the glow plugs before attempting to start? The only diesel experience is humvees and generators from my Army days.

Should look like this.

carey, the ignition switch on my 1700 also turns only one way,( to the right) it has never turn to the left, when I first cold start my tractor I turn the switch to the run position for 10 seconds and then on to start and it usually fires right up, I'll have to remember next time I go to start /crank the tractor I'll not turn the switch to run position I'll try starting it right away and see what happens, I bet it will flood and not start, I think as you said someone may have either changed the ignition switches or there are 2 different designs made,

I believe I checked when I was hooking mine up. I have power to my TS. in L or Acc. pos. Don't hold me to it but I believe to have power to the TS. while in Start also but not in Run/On. I'll try to remember to check that tomorrow if it doesn't rain me in. ;)

nexus, somebody has put a plug where your thermostart goes. It shows in your 4th picture. Bet one would screw right in there.

Thermostart was an option for cold climates. Looks like your tractor never needed one. If it starts easy, no need to change now. And your 'ignition' switch doesn't have that 'twist left for TS' position either. Forget it unless you discover you need TS.

A dealer here noted you have to turn off the engine to hear the horn anyway - so forget it unless it happens to work.

Front wheel camber is greater on tractors than cars. It looks fine.

You ought to see what I have for a radiator overflow. I tried the square bottle from Autozone and I couldn't make it fit. So I cobbled on a Tupperware jug from our 'give to Goodwill' box. I never should have posted a picture of it here! Norm razzed me so much I'll bet he still remembers it. :D

That transmission fluid appears to be homogenized with water and needs to be replaced. I don't see any other issues.

You did good!

Thanks, I am taking it slow and waiting for manuals to show up (well that's my excuse, truth is I am beat after 10hr Mid shifts and just want to sleep). But I hope to get the fluids taken care of after work this morning. What tranny fluid is recommended and what weight oil for Georgia? Also Is it possible/likely I would be able to source the oil/fuel filters locally? If so what are the part numbers?

Sorry for so many questions.

Hopefully in return I can amuse you guys with my customization antics after I get this thing up and running. (I built several get er done kind of implements for my old Toro rider)

With the transmission fluid that neglected, you need to clean the 'strainer' (wire mesh screen) inside there. It's behind a triangular plate on the lower front face of the transmission. Opening this will dump the transmission fluid, 4+ gallons. Some of us have had to scrub and rinse with diesel (poured in from the dipstick hole on top) to get crud out of the filter cavity.

Often that strainer needs to be replaced. So don't open the cover until you have lined up the strainer, cover gasket, and probably the o-ring that seals on a shoulder near the end of the screen mesh. Hoyetractor in Texas is where I got mine. Fredricks in Alabama might be faster for you. About $50-60. Hey Danny, do you stock these strainers?

Everything else is common local stuff.

I would just play around with the tractor for a couple of days before buying the service stuff. I would start service by re- torquing everything as soon as you have manuals and specifications. You will probably discover some small items that can be added onto a parts order. Maybe a proper overflow bottle? :) You might need to order the fuel filter and its o-ring if that isn't available local but there's no hurry.

Two instrument panel bulbs should light before starting. The overheat light can be tested by sliding up the boot at the temp sensor (top/front of the block) and slipping a grounded wire in there with ignition on. This should light the third lamp.

Thanks for the photos!

Last time I spoke to him He is stocking alot of parts for Yanmar tractors. He can also ship them to you. Shouldn't take long since your local. FWIW he is also a Fredrick's supplied dealer so there won't be much he can't get.

To check compression you have to pull injectors. I would get it cranked and if you can you have decent enough compression if its not smoking out of the crankcase breather tube.

Take a battery with you. Any top post automotive battery whould do fine for the test. Yo can even hook it to jump cables from your truck to get more power if worried.
