Opinions On This Dump Trailer?

H&H Trailers | 4.5x8 Homeowner Dump - H&H Trailers - The Handyman Dump Trailer

Would be used primarily for lawn clippings, tree branches etc hauling a couple miles to the landmill. Occasional use for dirt, sand, rock etc.
Is the narrow wheel tread a concern.
Lists for $3,000. Would probably add sideboards and a roll-up tarp.

Would like to hear opinions. Thanks in advance.

Probably good for a lightweight homeowners use. Capacity is only 1960 lb. so kinda limited if you ever need to get a load of gravel, stone, dirt etc. which would probably overload it.

Check your state law about brakes. Some states require brakes on trailers of this weight. I believe all states require brakes on trailers 3000# and over, some are 1500# and over. Check the dump angle, you'll need about 45* of angle for dumping and a little more would be better. (Note some of the bigger dump trailers are only arount 42*) Angle needed is dependent on the material, moisture content, etc. The 1960# payload will only give you about a half yard of dirt/gravel.

That trailer will not carry much, especially for the price. If it was me and all I could spend is the $3k, I would get a bigger flat bed trailer with removble sides. IMO, less than one yard can be shovelled quickly enough a dump is not needed. Above 3 yards I can see a dump trailer, the 1-3 yard is a gray transistion area and depends on a person's physical abilities.

"Personal use trailers, in Kansas, are exempt from registration if the loaded trailer is 2,000 pounds or less. If the trailer weight exceeds 2,000 pounds, there is a registration fee of $24. Loads that weigh more than 8,000 pounds must pay a registration of $34. Registration is paid to the County Treasurer's Office in the county where the trailer owner resides."

I didn't realize the 2,000 pounds or less requirement for registration but I'm guessing 99% of the light utility trailers used here fall above that and are not registered/tagged. Perhaps some of them are registered but do not require a tag? Not sure.

Good point on the dump angle. Sometimes a light load is harder to slide off than a heavier load. I have a 1/4" UHMW liner on the bed of my existing 4'x8' dump trailer but even that can be a challenge with a "sticky" load. I rigged up an under the bed winch for dumping so can go as much as about 60 degrees so the load just about has to fall off. It is a basic tilt bed but the winch uses the pivot to pull the wheels up off the ground a couple feet for the dump angle. Just need to replace the trailer as its old and ugly. (like me)

My interest in the above light duty trailer is mainly for the weekly or more runs to the landfill with grass clippings, garden debris and/or leaves and still light enough to be moved around manually. Dumping is a big plus at the landfill especially on a hot humid smelly summer morning.

That's interesting as its the same trailer as H&H listed in my first post above? Sure-Trac is made by Novae Corp of Elkhart ID as is the H&H brand. I'm guessing these light dump trailers are made in Mexico judging by the Spanish on the name plates.

A 3500 pound axle is going to be too light to do anything. Those little dump trailers are pretty common with a 5200 pound axel. There’s a select few with a single 7,000 pound axel which would be my preferred choice. Here’s a 5200 pound one listed for $3400.

I agree. The full size wheels/tires would be a major plus as would be the full width. Being able to see the trailer in the side mirror sure helps backing up too.

I started out wanting a single axel 7,000 pound to go behind my van to haul trash and ended up with this.
