For my Bx-22. Manual says it holds 2.6 US Qts. At that amount
the oil does not get past half way between the dots on the stick. Something about having less oil in it this time than with my last oil change, I swear the engine comes to a smoother hault when you turn off the key than it did when the oil level
was up at the top mark on the stick. Is this possible or am I
smokin with the indians? is there a preferred range for the oil level to be at.

Well, it is possible that your oil dipstick isn't reading correctly. There is a plastic (or rubber - not sure) fitting on it that determines how far the stick goes into the engine block and I think that can be moved. As long as you are between the upper and lower marks on the stick you are in a safe range, though, and if you are convinced that the engine runs (or stops) better with a bit less oil then you should be OK. I think /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif...

I dont think the manual takes into consideration an oil filter with that change. Noticed on my change that 2.6 did not even get it on the stick, 3.6 was right on the mark though.

Did not notice any change in starting or stopping the engine though.

The manual for my B2710 calls for 4.1 liters. This takes me to exactly the top line on the dipstick. It then drops back a little. (I believe due to filter absorbtion.)

The spec, however, for UDT and what the dipstick for that tells me is totally out of whack. The spec volume pushes it way above the high line on the stick. I'll be calling Kubota's technical department tomorrow morning to find out what they have to say about that and will post my findings.

Totally OT, but what a great movie /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif!

that movie gets more funny every time I watch it. Like History of the world or Mad mad mad world.

Oh. I hate doing oil change on my bx22. It is all easy but removing the front grill and then the sides. My old JD was much easier.

Why do you remove all this? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I can get at the filter without removing the sides and the drain is underneath. I also have a BX22.

You know Junkman, being Polish I never asked myself that. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So I want out and looked and I can just about get my hand on it. I will try doing the easy way next year.

Still learning I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry Mike, my apologies........ I just assumed that everyone here had the basic tools to service the tractor. Here is what I use. I purchased the band wrench at CAP (Consumers Auto Parts) and it works like a charm. Don't remember the cost, but if I had to guess, probably under $10. All the other strap wrenches in my tool box are for larger filters. I am a firm believer that if you are going to save the cost of dealer service, then you should at least purchase the proper tools to do the service. For those that don't know what size strap wrench to purchase, the Kubota brand oil filter is 3 1/4" in diameter. With this tool, you can remove the oil filter without removing the hood and side panels..... I am assuming, that almost everyone here owns a 3/8" drive ratchet and a 3" long extension to complete the necessary tools for the job. The oil filter is Kubota part number 70000-74034.

My BX gets an oil change every 25 hrs. It takes about 15 minutes and $5 in oil plus a filter (don't have that price available, purchased several when I was at the dealer some time back).

I just slide the oil pan under the tractor, remove the plug, have a soda, twist filter off with hand(s), oil gasket on new filter, screw new filter on, pour some quantity of oil in, check level, repeat until satisfactory amount of oil (plus a little extra for filter) is in crank case (I don't have a way of measuring tenths of quarts) and resume "work".

$5 plus filter is CHEAP insurance against engine problems. Besides, I have to have some reason to stop working to drink a soda!

You're even more careful than I am. I do mine every 50 hours (remember, the recommended interval is based on heavy use, not like passenger cars where they say 7500 miles "unless you drive your car like most people do"), and I thought I was being extra careful by changing the filter at the same time - filter changes are only recommended every 100 hours.

twist filter off with hand(s),

I've been lucky that way, too. Only had to take a strap wrench to mine once. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Junkman, no need to apologize. I totally did not even think of that, serious here. I figured there was no way I could get my polish hands in there; so, I needed to remove the sides.

thanks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I take the sides off on my L3010. Easy to take off and put back on. I might be able to remove the filter without taking them off, but why do that? With them off I can eyeball everthing & see whether or not the filter leaks. JMHO

Here's the Tractor Supply Co. oil filter wrench I used - cost $3.85! A 1/2" socket wrench/extension can be used in the end, or a 3/4" open end on the outside. It works fine, but is probably harder to reset as the filter turns than the metal one shown earlier. My BX-22 took almost one gallon with the filter. I was on a nice level surface. I used Kubota's 15W-40, which may get changed to something else for the winter.
