Hi, I went to the junk yard to get some pipe for a project. I thought it was steel, but it isn't very rusty, so I checked and found that its not magnetic.

I think it might be the pipe that a sucker rod goes through for a pump jack on a well site. It is 1 3/8" inside diameter.

It doesn't have a seam inside, and is threaded on both ends. It is probably something from the oil and gas industry, but seems like it is too thin walled for pipeline.

Is it stainless steel? It doesn't look it, how would I tell?

If it is just steel, why isn't it magnetic? And would it be stronger, or weaker than ordinary steel?

Thanks,

Most stainless still has at least some magnetic pull, but it can be hard to detect side by side with straight steel. I assume it was too heavy and hard to be aluminum?

Little confused over a couple of your statements. SST typ comes in 2 families, 300 series and 400 series. Their properties differ noticeably.

I had a stainless steel table with sink out of a restaurant, laid outside, and rusted big time. A magnet would stick to it.

Stainless Steel 304

Possible alternative grades to 304 grade stainless steel:

- Grade 301L: It is applicable for higher work hardening rate grade.
It could be required for certain roll formed or stretch formed components.

- Grade 302HQ: Lower work hardening rate grade. It could be needed for cold forging of screws, bolts and rivets.

- Grade 303: Higher machinability needed; lower corrosion resistance; acceptable formability and weldability.

- Grade 316: Used when higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is required, also in chloride environments

- Grade 321: Better resistance to temperatures of around 600-900°C. It has higher hot strength.

- Grade 3CR12: It has lower cost; reduced corrosion resistance and resulting discoloration are acceptable.

- Grade 430: It has lower cost; reduced corrosion resistance and fabrication characteristics are acceptable.

and then it "could be" titanium if it isn't ferrous, non magnetic and not soft enough to be lead or maybe aluminum. Should be a lot lighter than steel and is worth A LOT MORE than stainless at the supplier and the scrap yard. (approaching ten times the value last time i looked a few years back)
Probably not ti, but thought I would throw that in...

Manganese, very strong and not very corrosive at all, hard to tell bud. Its also non magnetic. Will get a slight orange tint to it.

The recycler can probably tell you what it is. They are in the business of being able to separate scrap to maximize profits and knowing their business. Our local guy is pretty good at looking at something and knowing pretty much what it is but he also has hand held analyzers that can tell exactly what alloy or element compositions are in a sample piece of metal.
