What kind of a Mall can you buy dirt at ?

JK

A powerful and useful tool that's cost you next to nothing for parts - good value

Rgds, D.

I bought a big truck load of dirt to divide up in small quantities. I have people asking for a load of dirt pretty often and the only place that sold dirt in small quantities was a huge rip off. Top soil is scarce here so it’s not like I can go in the back yard and dig some up.

I have a 2016 Chevy 3500 cab/chassis with flatbed. It's the work truck trim with vinyl seats and rubber floor, just the way I like it. The only convenience things I wish it had is climate control and steering wheel controls for the radio.

No A/C in TX, or just lacking duplicate controls ?

That's a good way to make friends, even if they pay their share.

Reminds me of years ago, in the city I grew up in....... A friend tells me to watch out, going around the back of his house after dark one night. His mother wanted some manure for the garden, but didn't understand how big a tandem load was !

I charge for it. The dirt cost money at $200 per big truck load and about 5 times that much at the other place and it cost fuel, tires, tags and insurance. That truck wears tires fast. The front tires were probably 75 percent when I got the truck and nearly junk now 8000 miles later. The alignment is pretty good. It’s just loaded heavy for a lot of the miles.

I'd expect those folks appreciate the deal you get from you, the other choice sounds spendy.

Even a Smart car costs money to run - actually the parts on those probably cost more than the ones you buy, but that's a whole other thread right there.....

Loaded like that, I'd want a really good highway rib front tire on it, something like a Duravis.

Nice hard working truck.

Now that I have everyone's attention!☺

Curious about other's opinion on trucks.
(I'm 65) I've had a truck except the last few years. I shouldn't have traded my '96 Chevy Cheyanne in about 2010...it had 36k miles, 350, manual, long bed, tow pkg. Otherwise "stripped" but how I ordered it. A farmer bought it within a few hours.
What I can't understand (don't want to make anyone mad)...but a truck should be a truck which you can't find much anymore.
I want 2 door, no carpet, a.c. is ok, vinyl bench seat.I don't even need radio.
Years ago all brands had their great models, and you could get full size or mini (4 cyl, fair mpg).
Around here every day you'll see one person driving a crew cab, tiny bed, all the frills, 4x4, tow pkg (never used), they're like $65-$80k. I can't understand. Why can't you buy a new stripped truck at a good price?

You make a few good points. It is where I was at 3 weeks ago.

So using auto trader dot com I found a LOT of white XL 4wd trucks with 40k average around the 2016 to 2017 year.
Not pushing Ford just sharing experience. Also besides Auto Trader try Enterprise Rentals. I found lots of trucks and why don't know but they were mostly 8' beds no frill trucks.

Or order one with the carpet removed option, manual windows and A/C.
Not familiar with GM/ Chevy products but maybe they have those options.
I'm 67 and had to trade my forever Tundra due to the weight of the NX4510 and trailer with implements. Way too close to its limits.
The F-250 XLT 6.2L is perfect. Good road trip truck and pasture queen.
Good luck in your hunt. Frustrating for sure but still doable with those fleet truck, they seem to be abundant.

...Toyota now forces all buyers into four doors. There is no longer even a 2-door option on Toyota Tacos.

I looked a year or so ago and couldn't find a single "mini" truck sold in the USA that was available in straight 2-door.

It wasn't that I wanted one, I was looking for a modern cost comparison to the original F-100.

It’s just got regular truck tires on it now, but they’re about shot. I’ll probably but something better on it. I’m still running within or pretty close to rated load for tires. I’d really like to buy a ford F-450 or Chevy 3500hd with 19.5 wheels. Either are a good bit more truck than mine. Buying a real single axle dump truck would be better but I’d be in the CDL gray area and loose a lot of maneuverability. And I might have spoke too soon about the parts. It blew a brake line tonight. I’ll probably pay this one done and that’ll probably double the parts cost. IMG_4430.JPG

I went through the USAA car buying service looking for the least expensive F150. $25,074. Standard equipment is vinyl bench seat, crank windows, 2 door, 6.5 ft bed, A/C. The only option is a Class IV hitch for $95. If I was looking for a new work truck, that would pretty much be the answer. There are tons of 1/2 ton and smaller working pickups on the road in Sacramento.

A couple of points, don't buy new, get a 2 or 3 year old vehicle. Depreciation is mostly done by then, still a lot of life in truck and you can save a lot..... insanity is paying what these dealers want for the new trucks. Heck my f150 Cost me less than the discount offered on a lot of the new trucks and mine was loaded and has been driven over 110k miles since purchase with nothing over normal maintenance.

Buying new vehicles will insure you remain poor... unless you can pay cash for the truck.
I am so glad so many do not listen to you. :)

Me too. Otherwise there wouldn’t be enough used trucks for the rest of us. One reason why so many people buy new is it’s easier to finance and more true on equipment.

California Sales Tax and License Fees on a new Luxury Truck can be 8K or more... plus the $1000 license/weight fee is the gift that keeps on giving...

My 85 van is about $280 for reg each year... plus smog and it adds up.

i own a 74 f-100 long bed single cab with a 360 auto 2wd. been lookin for about 3 years for a 4wd replacement for it and that new truck fever has been trying to creep in for a while now. so me & the wife went and test drove one last weekend. 2018 f150 2wd longbed with the trailering package. (the 4wd / longbed is as much of a myth as a unicorn. i have never seen one on a car lot since we started looking for one)

what a piece of gutter trash. i cannot believe that they are passing those trucks off as something you can work with. i can put 5 grand into my truck and it still be a better option that that 40k+ POS. the truck is to high to work out of. my old ***** can't even get up into the bed without a step or ladder system. the fancy new tow camera is to small to see when you are backing (might be something you get used to) and if you have to pull forward to readjust, it turns off. my biggest problem with it is the weight. my old truck tares out at 5700lbs. putting a tractor on the trailer lifts the bed up a bit but the wheels still stay on the ground. the new truck came up off the ground over 6 inches.

i guess i'm gonna stick with my old girl, and just give it a rebuild and some new shocks, and keep her on the road for another 50 years.

Those drivers residing in the rust belts do not have the option of operating a 15+ year old vehicle unless it has been oiled twice a year and had the salt washed out each spring. Even then the brake lines etc are stuck or rotten with corrosion .

We reside where it really does snow. I'm serious, we do get some here. As Buick implies, 15y is indeed tough on autos in snow belts, folks do it but its not easy. Some people own two where as one is for winter use and already rusty and is all-wheel drive, while the other is for summer and 2wd.

Given that the cruise pays for it’s self on trips and fewer speeding tickets. No brainer to order that option . AC and the tow package are also essential.

As for mileage the wife’s truck did 7.5Litres per 100Km last week . Crew Cab 4X4 with Max Towing package , donkey ear trailer mirrors , AC on , 90Km per hour and 420HP 6.2L .
Such mileage is not the norm and putting around during of course uses more .

I work at a Dodge dealer and I'm a Ford guy through and through. However the Ram trucks are very reliable and do not have many mechanical problems. The ZF8 speed auto transmission is stout.

What I'll say about new GM trucks is prepare to pay out the nose on oil changes, 8 quarts 0w20. Where I work its $10 per quart on synthetic oil.
