Hello. New to the forum. Really appreciate the great info here.

I am hoping for a bit of advice. I am in the market for a tractor.

I am looking for a used unit in the $25k-ish or less range. I don't care if it is an older unit, but would like something with low hours so I am not having to spend $$ to keep it going.

We are buying 11 acres and I need a tractor to take care of the property and to do light farming work. Initially I will need to disc/ harrow, then plant, and later mow the acreage. Also misc farm activities- remove old fence, build new fence, grade driveways, move snow, maintain manure, etc. In the future, I may want to hay the property and would like the ability to run a rake and square baler.

I am thinking a 4x4 tractor in the 60-80hp range with a loader on it.

Growing up on a hay farm, we had Ford tractors- 6600 2wd, 8600 2wd, and TW15 4wd. We had great luck with all these machines. I am thinking something in the size of our old 6600 would be a good fit for our new property- not too big to be useful for misc tasks, but big enough to have some muscle and run a baler in the future.

Any advice on brands to consider, models, and year ranges would be great.

There are a couple of 5000 series JD tractors (5210, 5420) for sale locally that look interesting, but had read a few posts by folks that weren't too happy with the 5k series and recommended going with older units... Also a NH Workmaster 55 local. A little smaller in the HP range, but in the ballpark...

At any rate, any advice would be amazing. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!

Peruse regularly craigslist and tractorhouse.com.

JD,MF,Kubota In any of these brands you should be able to find a 60-70 HP tractor.
Welcome to the site.

Edit: What do you consider low hours?

Thank you for the advice. Any recommended or ill-advised series to watch for with the above mentioned brands?

Would like to see sub 1000 hrs. Maybe 1500 hrs if well cared for.

Can't really say that I have heard of any ill-advised models. My MF's have been really good. None of them however fit your size or budget. If you saw a 4608 MF I wouldn't be afraid to look at it.

A short search of Bend OR craigs and I saw this JD: John Deere 542 Tractor with Loader

A little above your 25k but it looks like a decent deal from a lap-top anyway. And he may negotiate down a few hundred too?? That would be perfect for the small farming you describe. Though maybe a bit cumbersome if you have small jobs in tight areas. Worth a look and call.
