Hi all, well a few weeks ago on ebay I purchased a Peddinghaus Ironworker, wanted a mechanical as they are typically faster, more ridgid, quieter and well look cool, today it arrived and what a toy, played all night, for anyone who fabricates they are the cats a##, it punches upto 1 1/4 diameter, will cut upto 7 inch by 1/2 flat, shear angle3 x 3 x3/8, cuts mitres any angle, shear 1 x 1 and 1 1/4 dia bar and the best, it has a notcher for the times any or all the other combinations will not work, what a tool, it cost more to ship than what I paid and will be worth every penny, now need a project to do, one thing a hydraulic will do that the mechanical will not is bend bar and tube, a mechanical has to complete a full cycle where a hydraulic can be backed up. I will post a few pictures once I have the camera in the shop, in the perfect world everyone should have one in the fab shop.

The tool sounds great ... I am completely ignorant when it comes to machines like this .... What would something like that cost?

hi, the ironworker cost $975.00 on ebay, the shipping from Las Vegas to Saskatchewan was allmost $900.00 when you add the duty, tax and do not forget the quote for trucking was 450 but when they added the fuel surcharge it went up 30%, still for less than 2K it was way cheaper than anything I could find locally, a cheap hydraulic is $4000.00 and its noisy. The Peddinghaus are quality machines, one advantage of mechanical is speed, the cycle time of the punch is 2 to 3 seconds, a hydraulic is more like 5 to 6, if you do lots of cutting or punching it takes forever, I have a few projects one being a portable 7 1/2 gauge track for a steam engine, the sections are 8 foot, on each end of the flatbar I need 2 5/16 holes punched so 8 per section, fish plates have 4 each, also cutting the flat to lenget and ties 9 inch long 9 per section, lots of cutting and punching it will get well used.

Take care

Laurence

Those things are usually 3 phase. Are you one of the lucky ones who has 3 phase service , otherwise how are you handling it

WOW! That converter beats the heck out of anything the Professor dreamed up on Gilligan’s Island. :D

I have had an opportunity to work with the hydraulic model at the trade school where I have taken some welding courses. We were sheering old worn-out highway department snow plow blades to use as welding coupons. The shear would build-up pressure and then let go with quite a bang. The instructor demonstrated all the other features and I now know why envy is one of the deadly sins. Especially deadly if you try to hide one in the garage and the wife finds out!

it looks really neat. I dont have a clue how to use it
But I WANT ONE
I used to want one of everything... LOL

I have worked in commercial nuclear power for my entire career as an Engineer. Coming up in construction of these facilities, the maintenance shop had everything, and I mean everything. If a part didn't exist for any piece of plant equipment, they made it. Man I have seen some shop tools and machines that used to make me (like you said) want one.

Those guys could make anything.

The Engineering Prototype shop where I worked a lifetime ago had EVERYTHING to work on metal. The punch press was SWEET. It would punch through 1/2" steel, and made drilling pretty much obsolete for us.

If you were building some parts, it was nice to punch a 5/16 x 1/2 slot so you had some adjustments in your projects. I just don't have the volume or space to have one now, and the cheapy smaller new ones are $2-3K. Sure makes metal working nice............... I think I'm uptown with my cheap chinese drill press--way better than hand drilling...........
