Last week I purchased a used 1 ton 4'x6' dump trailer. It has a hydraulic cylinder with 8" stroke. Since I do not have any rear hydraulics on my tractor and already have an old 12V hydraulic pump from a wheelchair lift, I would like to use to pump to make the trailer a self contained unit. I have no specs on the used pump but I can see the outlets/inlets are 1/4". It even has a hand pump in case of low battery power. I have no knowledge of hydraulics and this question may sound silly but any tips on how I should proceed safely.

I will first purchase hose adapters 1/4" to 1/2". Next I guessing I'll connect the hoses, power the pump and test. Is that it?

Your pump should work fine, although probably VERY slow to power your trailer. But it will probably kill the battery on your tractor in short order, and may also damage your alternator in the long run. Adding rear remotes may just be cheaper:D

Does the pump have any specs on it, like GPM flow? Max pressure? or current draw?

What size cylinder is on the trailer?

The pump has no specs on it at all.

The cylinder specs from the manufacturer's website says 8" stroke.

Its hard to tell by looking at the pic if it will work or not. We have self contained dump trailers at work, but they have there own battery and the tow vehicle usually charges the power pack unit along with the break away battery. I have worked on wheel chair lifts and I know those pumps are pretty strong, the lift themselves are heavy, not to mention if the person in the chair has a electric chair, which weigh allot also. Are you plan on running the power for the motor off your tractor or hooking up its own battery? The motor will draw allot and you would need to run a good size wire. If it were me, I would install a battery for the power pack itself and run a charge wire to keep the battery charged in between dumping, also, do you know if your unit it power up and gravity down, or power up and power down? But like mentioned, rear remotes might be the way to go, do you think you could ever use rear remotes for something else in the future?? On the other hand, a being a self contained unit, you could haul it using something else, while using your tractor to load it.

I have no idea where it came from. I picked it up at a yard sale.

To be honest I have not thought of whether I'll use a battery or run it from the tractor. First I have to see it it actually works. How would I tell if it is power up and power down or power up and gravity down?
