How tight should the nut be on new tie rod ends .they have castle nuts .thanks

Tight. Use a standard torque chart for the diameter and thread pitch of your rod end and either grade 5 or 8.8 hardness (depending on whether the dimensions are Imperial or Metric) if you don't have a published spec for the specific parts.

If they use a taper mount, run the nut down to about 20 ft/lbs. then tighten to first available pin hole--Never back off to find hole. Install the cotter pin.

20 lb/ft could be woefully inadequate on a larger size rod end. Torque needs to be relative to size and sufficient to seat the taper. Striking the side of the receiving socket with a hammer during the tightening process will help with the seating.
