I would second that. I've used them on a couple of trailers and they work great.
We've used these for fastening wood to metal and they worked pretty well. The wings make the hole in the wood larger than the screw body and snap off when they hit the metal. There are small fins under the head that aid in getting the heads flush.

Might be cheaper but I doubt the same performance all things considered. I-shaped cross section is the most efficient way to design simple engineered beam where bending strength is driving factor vs. shear strength (web strength). The web does relatively little to help with bending strength. Trusses are another level of strength, where instead of relying on the web for stability and shear loads, the truss members are instead compression/tension members but they generally take more vertical space to be efficient... a la roof trusses.

Sometimes space is a restriction requiring stronger materials or more efficient space for bending strengths... especially for long spans. Nowadays it is cheaper to manufacture a wood engineered I beam than a the raw material cost of say a 2x12 fir and can handle longer spans and are more stable.

Sorry for what might appear as a lecture here but I am guessing many don't understand why all the choices in joists.

Like I said, Same performance.

I paid $1839 in 2002 for mine, including rim board and $511 for advantech flooring. For 24’ x 30’

Needed to figure out a better way to get the joists up to where we needed them. It was killing us, my buddy on the ground lifting it all up, them me on the scaffolding lifting it the rest of the way. He stood up once he got on the scaffolding on wednesday and his head went into a beam already placed resulting in a concussion. Nothing thursday and today because of it.

And it's good because today I had a brilliant idea. I had worked a dozen different ways but nothing was working. Until that eureka moment. Drywall lift. my lift goes up 11', clears the scaffolding, then we can lift it in place, and handles 12' drywall. We lifted it, then swung it around with a guide rope, then put it into place easily. I can't believe we did it 2 days the hard way almost killing ourselves.

I took off the scaffolding wheels and put the points on cinder blocks with pins to keep it from moving. it was perfect, couldn't have been easier.

I was about to buy a scissor lift. I was at my wits end. turns out brains baking in the sun all day don't think very well.

That idea came none too soon! Sorry you didn't have your Eureka moment earlier. Keep chugging... and safety first!

I likely would have had my tractor with forks by now LOL

Good idea. Not sure how high my drywall lift goes, I forget about it.

The idea was to lift them up with my pallet forks on my bobcat, but it's engine blew up. I don't know now though, the drywall lift seems easier. It lifts it exactly where I need it instead of putting it at the front.

One of the benefits of the Genie lift. Like your ingenuity 🤙

You may take some time know to put up a bunch of beams up now in one place when you have the space to raise them up and turn them. Once you run out of concrete floor to support drywall lift you may be out of luck. Then you on one end, helper on the other end to slide them down into position. Just a thought. Jon

2 more installed. this time only me. If it wasn't for going back and forth so much between scaffolding and hte 95F heat, I could finish it all myself.

Are there some bolts that are going to tie these 2 together, so that the 2nd one will help the first one bear the weight of the opening edges?

I can't really see them if they are there.

They’re not all in yet but there is 3 every 4 feet of the self tapping screws.

I just did 2 more for a total of 4. Doable by one person but much easier with 2.

Only reason for stripping out tecks in 12g is operator error . When driving in tecks start with full pressure then as the drill point cuts back off pressure and let screw coast in . Been running metal frameing crews for 40 years tring to teach new guys to screw off is just a timeing thing . Keep gun straight let off trigger as soon as it cuts through. Most metal frameing in no load bearing wall is 20 g and never strip out a screw in that a 12g structural should be a piece of cake. Wing tip screws are the ticket for plywood installation. 11" c vise grip is your most valued tool in metal frameing . Lean joists on top plate , Take a rope and clamp it on end of stud, one guy picks up joist and top guy pulls rope clamp joist in place then screw it . wash rinse repeat .:drink:

I致e done a few parking slabs but, I知 no pro.

I知 GCing my house and garage but leaving the important stuff for the pros. I write checks and clean up cigarette butts and discarded water bottles, somebody痴 gotta do it right?

It cost a fortune but, oversized footings, rebar in footings, 4000 psi material with heavy wire in the pads. Been watering it for 2 days now! My guy said, by the foot, I may have the most expensive foundation in the county, and that was not a compliment. He thinks I got more money than brains. That ain稚 saying much!

It痴 such a pleasure to watch a big crew, 9 guys, all work together, like a machine.

They got here at 6:30am, 5 trucks later and they were gone by 3. Took me 1 year to get here anD took them 8 hours, max.

I can稚 wait, my house in Pinehurst sold so fast I知 forced to live on site, in a tin can leaky, smelly dumpster camper in a sea of orange mud. It could be worse, it can always get worse.

Should go faster now. Famous last words.

Keep that concrete wet as long as you can. I spent $100 at harbor freight for 3 additional hoses and a 4 way splitter.Too late for me but one guy suggested building little wall around the entire pour and flooding it for 7 days. I致e heard to soak burlap and keep it wet for 3/weeks....and eat your vegetables!

Question for the pro concrete guys out there.

I paid extra for 4000 psi concrete with retarder. If the web experts say, it doubles or triples the strength, are they saying my 4000 psi is going to 8000 psi or, are they saying if I don稚 do it I will only get 2000 psi, capsshe?

My buddies think I知 crazy out there moving hoses in the nasty orange mud in my skivies and a hat, that痴 it!

Good luck!

Jay, you're probably already ahead of me on this, but a suggestion - as you near the point where there's no room to raise and spin the joists, lift the remaining joists and pile them to one end. Then distribute and fasten. That's how I handled the trusses when I built my shed and it worked well.

I need about 4' diagnoal to get them up through, but I figured at the end it would be just easier to raise them strait up outside and lift them over the end.

I agree with chim. Seems it would be easier to raise the last two up and push them to the end, raise the 3rd from the end and install, then slide 1 & 2 into position and install. Since you already have the lift in place, it's right there and you're familiar with the procedure VS one more change in operations.

Anyhow, I'm sure enjoying your documentation, descriptions and photos. Thanks!
