Not sure what the real name for them is.
Hammer stapler or hammer tacker. I've seen them used for tacking tarpaper, but I've never seem them used to install shingles. Just my experience. Seems like you'd have to hammer pretty hard. They also make electric staple guns.

Have the kids wear a helmet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Or, after the first couple of pokes, they will learn real quick.

I spent some time in Nicaragua. The folks there use barbed wire for clotheslines. No need for pesky clothesline pins. A real money and time saver. The folks are kind of short. Average 5 feet. I am 6'2". The barbed wire runs over the walkways. I learned real quick to duck to avoid the barbed wire. Your kids will learn real quick.

How about self adhesive roll roofing? There are multiple brands such as MSR100 or AC Topseal. It's real similar to a Ice & WaterShield membrane but with full size granuals like a shingle. it comes in colors but most commonly found in black or white. Check with an independant lumber yard or one that specializes in roofing, I don't think you'd find it at a Home Depot.

What if you took some sheets of inexpensive plywood and put them on the UNDERside of the rafters, sort of like drywall?

Just make it a barrier so they can't easily get through it.

I've got nails in my attic and I HAVE busted my head on them before and they hurt /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Might blow the budget but would allow you to nail through top side and prevent accendents from the under side.

Cut the nails off after you nail them (sharp end of course).

As others have sugested, I've used 1/2 inch staples in this situation and the shingles have been on that building for 11 years or so now. I'd do it again.

Staples will not have the holding power of nails. If you are in a high wind area, I'd be somewhat concerned about that option.

If you try to use 1/2" nails you will hammer your fingers mercilessly, holding them between thumb and forefinger. If you feed them between you index and middle finges you will nail though the loose skin on a nuckle and you'll be nailed to the roof. Use longer nails, and try one of the cover ups suggested. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As always, TBN is a great source of information. Thank you, everybody.

I tried stapling a shingle to the plywood as a test and I dont trust it at all.

But in local HD they have felt paper in rolls for flat roofs. This type of cover is glued using cold cement. Would you think it would stick to steeper roof also? It would save me some time too.

But this is my last attempt for different solution - I will most likely use normal nailes and cut them off or cover them up or something like that

I would use longer nails and put a ceiling inside- Rolled rooing is a pain- you still need to nail the upper edge down- at least that's the way I would do it.
