Greetings,
I have a 1971 MF 165, I know the MultiPower or Multi-Power depending on what you search for is broken. It will free wheel down hills so I believe it is stuck in low. Is this correct? Before I start playing with the linkage or tearing it apart a little more I'll give you more information so you can hopefully give me the information I need to make the correct decision. When driving it on the road or in the field if you shift from high to low the RPM's increase ( 100 to 150 Rev's) and vice-versa from low to high, but there is no speed increase or decrease. I remember driving this tractor 15 to 20 years ago and when you shifted the Multi-Power on there was a notable speed increase as well as the engine slowing down, but that no longer happens. Any cheap fixes or should I bite the bullet and have a mechanic come fix it?
On another note how much should it cost to have the brakes replaced?
Clutch?

Thanks,
Michael

Sounds similar to th IH "torque amplifier" of the 1970s.

They used to have the same problem after a few years use and I believe it was a fairly major operation to fix it.

Ours were traded-in without having it fixed.

Sounds as if it isn't working. MultiPower isn't the easiest thing to diagnose troubles via internet. You might be ahead of the game to get a mechanics "hands on" opinion.

Some early 165's had dry disc brakes. Most had wet disc. EIther way, the axle housings need to come apart to replace. Not that difficult. Most shops charge around $300 and parts to replace brakes on a 165.

Clutch replacement. If payiong a shop, look to spend anywhere from $750 to $1500 depending on labor rates and parts cost. A rebuilt clutch assembly can be had for under $250. New, as much as $600. It's a one day job for a decent shop/mechanic.

I helped a friend put a rebuilt clutch in a 135 just last week. Doing the labor ourselves and using a qualified rebuilder, we did the swap for under $300.

I finally had a chance to play the last 3 weekends.
New brakes. Nice for not so straight fire brakes.
Multi-power. After reading big deans notes and adjusting and adjusting and adjusting, and well you get the picture Multi-power now works properly. A hint to any one adjusting it. The adjustment pin/clamp on the top of the transmission put all the way to the top per big deans suggestion. Them start the tractor and remove the battery and adjust away.
to test whether you are wasting time and need to rebuild the tranmission unhook the linkage move this pin all the way up drive the tractor. move the pin all the way down. drive the tractor. If Multi-power engages/ disengages at maximum travel ( I moves mine with needle nose pliars you are just need to adjust the linkage until it operates properly.
Thanks,
Michael
