I am considering putting a coating like Line-X on the underside of my mower deck (for my CC 2550). My hope is it would extend the life of the deck.

Has anyone ever done this or something similar? Any experience or words of wisdom one way or the other?

Dave

I just pulled off my mower deck and used POR on it. A little goes a long way and gives you a rock hard chip proof finish. it also checks the rust. They sell it on ebay. Do a search. 6 ounces will do your deck. My son did his mower 5 years ago and there still isn't a mark in the underside of his deck which led me to do mine.

Thanks johnk. You mean POR-15, right?

I checked it out and it sounds like it is a good coating for the underside of mower decks.

Are you aware of any other place to get beside e-bay?

Not really sure where else to get it. My son bought it off ebay and I did also. Yes, thats the stuff. POR 15. A little goes a long way and from my sons observations after 5 years I figured it was cheap insurance.

If POR 15 goes over any painted surface it will peel.

It never peeled the paint on my son's deck. After 5 years there isn't a chip or mark on it. Just an observation. It's worth the few dollars for the added protection. Their may be other products out there and this is just one I have used. If there are others lets hear about them.

POR-15 is indeed a very good product for most any surface. There are rules to follow which is a must!!! SIX PACK-POR-15 Inc.
This is a good link to follow for a good price. Buy the 4oz cans and you wont have lost product, as one can will paint 12 sq ft. Scroll down to the information section and click on Directions for people who don't read directions. You will need the marine clean treatment and follow up neutralizer as listed. Hot rodders swear by this stuff. I have used it in the offshore oil industry and found it to to be a great product IF USED CORRECTLY...

I bought the 3- 4oz cans with a bottle of cleaner and etcher for 29.99 + shipping. I did both sides of my 48 inch mower deck and the tubes and front side of a 50 inch plow blade for my ATV before I ran out. I was impressed.

Where did you find that combination?

Thanks, Bob B.

Two years ago I had a leak in my F-250 powerstroke oil pan. I went to the link that 1olddawg gave and bought a super starter kit. Used the directions they gave and still no leak to date! Saved me $1,500 on repairs! That kit should be enough to do the bottom of a deck. Bob

I use a graphite spray paint which can also be painted on. You must sand it down to bare metal and then spray. It's called Mower Guard and is made by Slip Coat. I will try and find a link.

After you try it let us know what you think. My feelings were that it was a great product. I whacked my paint job with a hammer and it didn't chip. If it saves my deck for an extra 5 years or even less it was well worth it. I was thinking of ordering more and putting it on my augers to see how it holds up. I think that would be the ultimate test.

Thanks to all for this info!!!!
I just ordered the five piece kit to do my CC1050 deck. Anything will be a help, when cleaning next mow season. To all, have a Happy New Year.

Hello all,
Just finished my 50" deck and one 4 oz. can will do one complete coat (it does go a long way). This stuff is the hardest stuff i've ever seen. I forgot I had put the brush on my wooded workbench and came back the next day and tried to remove it, NOT!!! Broke the handle off first, then I had to take a chisel to pry the bristles the rest of the off and it took some of the wood with it. LOL!!! I'm with the rest of you, if it holds up 5 years it's well worth the time & money spent. Thanks again for the info.

Fish4Um - how did you prep the underside prior to painting? I know about their chemicals, but what else did you do? Power wash, wire brush....I have a 4oz kit that I am going to use on my 54" deck and want to make sure it lasts.

Thanks!!!!

Vernonator,
Sorry for the late reply!
I am the abrasive tech for the company for which I work (I am able to get my hand on all abrasives avalible) , so I was able to grind/sand everything down to bare metal. 3M has a 3" disc made of scotchbright that does a wonderful job. I used cartridge rolls, barrel sander bands, used 5A medium polishing wheels(3"-4" diameter). When everything was down to bare metal (almost all), I prepped the metal per directions. Now,this took some time, but it's done correctly. I may have 8-10 hrs into it. Take your time and you'll be fine.

Hey no problem on the wait, still to cold here to think about mowing anyway (though the new snow thrower for the Cub is getting a work out). I figured that the best method would be to get to bare metal...I will have to break out the grinder and fire it up....or I may just truck it into town and get it bead blasted, that may be the easiest in the long run (it has lost alot of paint over the last 3 yrs)

Thanks Again.....
