Montana Roadkill

I don't know of an NC law that PREVENTS picking up roadkill.

When the wife got an eight pointer four years ago.....

With her car.

She was about a mile from home when she hit the deer. By the time I got to the accident site, several people had already stopped asking for the deer. The deer was not dead yet. Eventually, we gave the deer to a guy in a pick up. I would guess she had at least three people asking for that deer in less than 15 minutes.

Ironically, I saw four dead deer on the side of the road to day which was odd for this time of year. Also saw a dead vulture.

Later,
Dan

Roadkill has been legal in West Virginia for years.

A 130 grain .270 at 2700 fps or a Mini Cooper at 55, not a lot of difference. Fresh killed is fresh killed. BTW I have used both to kill deer - one is much more cost effective than the other!

I know at one time the Montana Fish and Game would take poaching confiscated animals/meat and animals put down after car/deer accidents to a butcher who would process it for the homeless shelters. The police officer on the scene would call them out. You, as the citizen, were not allowed to take the animal. Not sure if they would take 'freshly killed' or only ones they actually had to put down after a car/deer crash. They might not respond to those calls anymore and possibly more animals going to waste hence the change in the law.

Near where I lived there is a wildlife refuge in the valley bottom along the river and farmers fields up on the sides with a highway in between. There were always dead deer laying along side the road, you had to really be paying attention after dark as they would cross to feed in the fields and then cross back before morning.

Allowing people to harvest road kill is a great idea until the local BBQ delivery truck gets a cow catcher installed and the whole menu starts to taste a little more savory.

I think allowing roadkill to go to waste is a shame. I've heard they stopped in some states because the meat was not government inspected and if they gave un-inspected meat to a charity......they could be sued. Another dumb law......they don't inspect my elk or deer meat and I've been eating that for years.....even served it to friends and haven't been sued yet.:2cents:
