Mechanical shuttle transmission

Looking at the L4400 tractor which has the gear drive transmission which includes a mechanical shuttle shift in the low and reverse ranges. Can anyone tell me how this transmission works when in low shifting between forward and reverse? Do you use the clutch? Can you use it at any RPM?

just got my new 4400..the shuttle is a big and nice change from the old system...you have to clutch ...but just move the lever forward to go forward back to go backward...the shift lever stays in what ever gear you select..neat system....

you still have to stop before changing directions but system is very easy to use and efficient. the syncronized shuttle is better, but hey, so far this tractor has been oustanding.
