I paid over $5,000 for my queen sleep number mattress with the adjustable head and foot and message. . .it is perfect.
also got the "my pillows" which for me are great.

Why didn't you ask?:laughing: On May 18, 2016 (yep, 2 years ago) I paid $1,937.55 for our "Queen Dual p5" bed. We already had the base that we bought years ago with our earlier Sleep Number bed, but I don't recall what we paid for that. Then on November 30, 2017 (yep, just last year) we paid $1,818.58 for the adjustable base to be added to the Sleep Number bed, so the new remote control will not only change the air pressure in either side of the bed, but can raise and/or lower the head of the bed or the foot of the bed.

I don't remember what we paid for the earlier "5000" model some years ago.

After much research, I bought a latex mattress online from SleepEZ (an American family business based in Arizona).

#1 advice that was given to me: Do not buy a big-name mattress (most begin with "S"). These used to be fine American companies, but their mattresses are now made in China and are cheap in every way except price.

Foam mattresses are great for anyone with aches and pains, as they provide excellent pressure relief. Latex foam is completely different from memory foam. Latex is a natural rubber product; memory foam is made mostly from petrochemicals. Memory foam molds to your body, providing pressure relief, but you will slowly sink down into it throughout the night; some people like this, some don't. I felt like I was stuck in concrete and had a hard time turning over. Latex also provides excellent pressure relief, but it also has "bounce" so you don't sink in; it's more like floating while being gently supported. And I don't wake myself up just trying to turn over.

An alternative to an all-foam mattress, which are expensive (I did this for the guest room and it turned out great). Buy a no-frills, no-name, very firm, American-made, flippable inner-spring mattress. (No "luxury top"; those are stuffed with cheap poly-fluff which breaks down quickly.) Your local mattress store will probably carry this mattress, but will not want to sell it to you. Then buy a 2-3 inch topper, either latex or memory foam, depending on which you like best.

Watch out for "cheap Chinese memory foam." A quality high-density memory foam or latex foam topper should sell for around $300 (queen). A quality foam bed will last a lifetime.

In all reality - run away from most innner spring mattresses - they coils are not nearly as heavy as they used to be so they will sag..

Sleep number, memory foam, or latex foam are probably the best options - but i highly recommend the latex foam

After having 2 mattresses fail within 3 yrs of being new (both were replaced under warranty).. We got a split (his and her side), 3 layers of latex foam, from sleep ez.. We paid about $2500 at the time and it has been well worth it

That's fine and dandy unless your allergic to latex like I am Mom had a latex memory foam in her guest bedroom. Wife and I went over and spent the night and didn't realize the bed was latex. Sheet came loose in the middle of the night and my skin contacted the latex. I ended up broke out in hives and sleeping on the couch

I will admit it was comfy till the hives started.

We bought a 4" thick memory foam topper when they were on sale at Wally world for $100. Cut it down shorter and put it on the master bed in our camper.

Just want to suggest to those whom have mentioned snoring on this thread. You may want to get tested for sleep apnea. I too snored. When I was being treated for possible emphysema, the doctors diagnosed me with sleep apnea. Using a CPAT (APAT in my case as in adjustable positive air pressure), I sleep better and feel more rested in the am. Plus, according to a recent story circulating on the news networks, using a CPAT may improve your *** life (LOL).

We bought a Tempurpedic oriabout 10 years ago.. it was expensive at the time..and after about a year I hated it,but felt like I had to get my money's worth out of it and suffered with it for another 4 years. Finally cut it up with a chainsaw and made 4 dog beds out of it. Went to a firm innerspring mattress...made my shoulders hurt and my hands fall asleep. ... Then went to some super fancy firm with pixy dust pillow top super expensive bla bla bla.. POS that ended up breaking down and sagging in the middle that gave me a crazy back ache. ( I sleep on my side or stomach) Back to the bed store and tried the latest and greatest Tempurpedic....again... had it for 30 days and I felt like I was sleeping in a ditch... called them back while it was still under their 30 day guarantee and returned it.. bought a basic firm innerspring and a 4" topper from Kohls for 350.00... so far it's ok..been a few months.

Very typical experience....

Memory foam is not for everybody. Some like it, some will hate it.
Fancy brand-name mattress with pillow top: tend to fail and sag within a few years at most because *they are made with cheap materials*.
A firm innerspring mattress with no topper has no *pressure relief*. You need a squishy layer on top to cushion your body.
Sounds like you've finally found the solution that works for you!

I went ahead and quoted some info from Mattress Underground:

Comfort is what you feel when you first lie on a mattress ... and is mostly about pressure relief.

Support is what you feel when you wake up in the morning ... either with or without back pain or discomfort ... and is mostly about alignment.

Durability is what you will feel over the years as the foams and other components begin to soften and degrade and this is all about how long a mattress maintains the comfort and support qualities that you need.

In general terms the deeper layers or components are all about primary support and alignment. They "stop" the heavier parts of the body and in particular the pelvis from sinking down too far. The upper few inches of the mattress are all about pressure relief in all sleeping positions and side sleepers need thicker and softer, back sleepers are in the middle and stomach sleepers need the thinnest firmest comfort layers of all the sleeping positions because otherwise the risk of sleeping in a swayback position can be quite high. The comfort layers also provide secondary support which is the lighter support that fills in the "gaps" in the sleeping profile (such as the waist on the side and the small of the back when you are on your back) and helps to maintain the natural curvature of the spine. The area in between the top few inches and the deeper support layers are the "transition layer or area" which helps with both.

I can tell you where I will never shop again. Wife purchased a "Firm Memory Foam" mattress and a sofa from Ashley Furniture some years back. The mattress was like sleeping on a board and the sofa didn't match anything in our living room. I called them the day after the purchase and they would not take either back. We wasted a couple hundred dollars on different pads trying to get the mattress more comfortable and finally gave up and got rid of it.

Our mattress before the current was a mattress in a box from Walmart and served us pretty well. Just before getting our mattress from Big Lots I realized our foundation had a sag in it. Turning that around made a huge difference in how we slept but we had already decided to buy a new mattress on sale day so we moved forward with that decision. We required a new low profile foundation for the thicker mattress anyway. No regrets so far.

IMHO mattress is all advertising hype.
Our forefathers mostly slept on piles of straw.
Buy a cheap mattress and place it on a sheet of 3/4" plywood and you will have a nice night's sleep.
the more more I use my 'cheapee' the better it fits my body form as I have broke it in.

The object is to have your spine relatively in a straight line so as to not create aches and pains.
Buy a new mattress and you will have to all over again make it conform to your body shape.
Forget the adds that show a glass of wine that spills not when U lie down on the mattress.

INMHO the pillow is probably the bigger culprit for poor sleep and or achy backs.
Being cheaper you can afford to experiment in this area.
LOL, feathers come cheap!

You're right that most mattress marketing is hype. But what we're trying to do in this thread is cut through the *hype* and talk about how to shop for a quality mattress that will be comfortable for your individual body.

I'm a cheapskate, and it killed me (after much research and shopping) to spend $1,600 on a latex bed. I have herniated disks in both my lower back and neck, arthritis, and all the aches and pains of overusing my body for a lifetime. Used to have constant back pain and would wake up every morning very stiff and sore. Now, my back has been basically pain free for, what, a couple of years now. So WORTH EVERY PENNY. But definitely take the time to find the *right mattress for you* which may be completely different from the right mattress for me.

Also agree the right pillow is important. (IMO the "My Pillow" pillows are the epitome of hype. Check out the online reviews on those things.....)

The pile-of-straw (or loose feather bed) of yore wasn't a bad system. When you got into bed you'd arrange it so that it conformed to your body. But you have to fluff it up again every couple days. This is per my mom, who slept on them growing up on a farm back in the day.

I'm right there with you on the "My Pollow", wife got a pair of those Christmas a year ago, never liked it, but use it since she said it was my Christmas gift. The one I use is like any old wore out pillow and the other one is in the spare bedroom.

I actually can fall to sleep sitting at the computer, LOL
As to TV, well it has to be a really good program for me to see it all. Commercials (all too many these days) tend to get me to nod off.

Must be inherited as dad could catch a few while sitting in a waiting room to call on a client.
He was well enough known and liked that the receptionists would wake him when the client could see him.

Some of my best sleeps were hunting and sleeping on a pile of fir branches out in the fresh air.
OK, a tad stiff come sunrise but well rested.

As to pillows, well I still remember that nice down stuffed one that my wife tossed after too many years of usage.
But who can afford a down pillow today.

My wife and I just bought a latex mattress online from sleeponlatex.com. We tried them because Consumer Reports rated them as one of their top two foam mattresses. We are still in our 100 night trial. But customer service has been great. Paid $1500 for the king mattress, and 45 days later saw they had lowered the price to $1200. I called and they gave me $300 back. The "soft" latex mattress was much harder than we expected, so we added a 3" latex topper to it for 50% off or $175. That made the mattress much softer, and I sleep better knowing I just saved $300!

:laughing::laughing:Yep, very true. My wife likes her "My Pillow" pillow. I haven't tried it, but just picking it up and feeling it is enough for me to know I wouldn't like it.:laughing:
