Looking To BuyA Yanmar

Been lurking here for a while and have a few questions. I need a tractor, 18 - 24 HP, and don't want to spend a lot of money for a new one. I have been looking at the Yanmar 1610D with a front end loader, Koyker. Here is the problem, I live in Montana. The nearest dealer I can find is Hoye Tractor in TX. If I were to buy from them, it would have to be sight unseen and then arrange to have it delivered. Is Hoye tractor a reputible company? would you all buy one sight unseen? Does anyone have an idea of what I should pay for said tracor.

Just to clarify - We (Hoye Tractor) only sell the Yanmar tractor parts. Stan's Tractor sells the tractors. We are 2 completely seperate companies about 30 miles apart.

Little Miami Trading Company posts on this forum as "LMTC". You can make a search of the forum for that user name and get some idea of the feelings of the forum members toward that dealer. I'll give you a hint, he's held in quite high esteem.

I've not bought a tractor from LMTC, but I did buy an aftermarket ROPS and would not hesitate to go back to LMTC for anything, big ticket or small.

I did not buy my tractor from Wayne (little miami) but have bought parts, loader and ROPS from Wayne and found him to be straight up. If I buy another tractor it more than likely be from him. Of course with a Yanmar it is not likely that I will need one. My input big dan

A good honest dealer a lot closer than TX is Ernie's Imports. He's about 40 NE of Salem Or. I can attest to his honesty. Ernie only handles clean models directly from Japan and NO VN rebuilds. Have no idea what is has in stock at this point.

I've been more than pleased with the tractor I bought from him and he's always been more than decent to me when ever I've needed something including info.

Any dealer that you see regularly on this forum, (unless they are regularly coming on to defend themselves ), is reputable; however you will probably have to pay their asking price for a tractor.

Having a tractor delivered can be a scary thing. There is a very short list of dealers that I would personally trust to deliver a tractor to me.

So far, the top of that list have already been mentioned. One in particular said something awhile back (sorry I don't recall which one specifically) "All Tractors Break" and wow has that stuck with me. So True! And I don't care if it's a new JD with 10 hours and under warranty or a Yanmar you've had for five years...you have to rely on the dealers that are going to be there for you.

Call them, ask their prices and let them know your budget. IMHO prices are relevant to how it's equipped i.e. FEL, ROPS and seat-belts, PTO cover neutral safety clutch and OR coupler. Costly items if you bought a bare tractor and added all the features already available with a good dealer.

Here is a brief example of what I'm trying to convey: There is a YM1610D for sale a few miles away. Bare bones (none of the above items installed) but nice tractor and selling for $5K with 1100 hours. There is also another model a little further away...a bigger HP model (930 hours) with a Koyker FEL and 5' Howse Box-blade for $3900. BUT it's a YM2200. Most forum members and certainly all the dealers worth their salt know which is the best buy. I'm sure you will too after talking with dealers, other forum members and people that actually own and operate Yanmars in general.

And well worth it. These regulars sell carefully selected units that are then set up properly. Your chance of getting a dud is minimal - One dealer said he extended his warrany from 30 days to 90 and then to six months at no additional cost, since he so seldom has a warranty claim.

In contrast to this standardized product, there are other sources that are a blind gamble.

I bought my unit from a suburbanite wannabe farmer who had bought it from a longtime owner in neglected condition. He then screwed up everything he touched. In a year he put on a new radiator, starter, one front tire (mismatched), new OEM belts & hoses, a loader hose, and a cheapo 'reconditioned' battery, and that still didn't make it reliable. After I got it home and went back for the disk his first question was "How in the world did you get it started to get it off the trailer?"

He had overlooked the obvious stuff - the wheels squeaked because the lungnuts weren't quite snug, the loader frame was a mad orchestra of clattering loose bolts, and the fuel was a rancid witches brew. I think it was pre-1994 high sulphur diesel from an old farm tank. Replacing the fuel and filter, the battery, and retorquing everything from bumper to bumper was about all it needed to reveal a solid tractor. But buying it as-is was a real gamble.

So an experience like mine is one of the cheaper alternatives. I don't recommend it unless you have good mechanical skills and also feel lucky. I wouldn't expect a unit from an auction or a roadside seller to be in better condition than mine was, even if the appearance has been cleaned up nicely.

In summary the reputable dealers who post here are worth the prices they ask. There really is added value included in their product. Mark is right, these guys are about the only dealers I would consider buying from sight-unseen.

Here's an added tip: I suggest send a PM to recent, and not-so-recent Yanmar buyers who have posted about problems or unsupported 'warranties', and ask who they bought from.

I heard good things about EFC Equipment in the Tri Cities area of Washington.
EFC Construction When I was there about two weeks ago he had about 10 tractors in the 18-22hp range.

We have a truck that goes to Lennox, SD every 2-3 months, and could probably come up with a decent freight rate by waiting for that run, but if EFC or Ernie's is within reach of you, there is your answer.

I dropped by at EFC yesterday to pay the bill for the installation of a Koyker loader for my FX18. (The EFC sales lot is just a 10 minutes drive from my house) I found that Buck's inventory is noticeably low now, but there seems to be a number of tractors still there in that hp range (including one that appears to be identical to my baby).

By the way, I really really believe in buying from a nearby dealer if possible. When I bought my Yanmar from EFC last year, I was able to drive a number of units around the lot before I picked the exact one I wanted. It was serviced and delivered to my driveway the next day!! Then, last week when I accumulated the money for a loader, I ordered it by telephone. Ron picked up my tractor on Friday and delivered it on Tuesday with the loader installed.

That is as close to instant gratification as you can get.

Incidently, the only problem I have had with the tractor is numerous flat tires from Russian olive tree thornes. But that is my problem, and it is easily fixed with plenty of "Slime."

If you haven't already, contact Ernie and see what may be coming in. I'm sure a lot of dealers let inventory drop during the winter and start restocking as spring hits. Would say same thing about any dealers with on-line info which seems to show little or no inventory for used tractors at this time.

That is my exact tractor. 1610d with Koyker loader 2 years old, and a box scraper, and 60 inch rock rake. I live in Utah and will be selling mine as soon as my yard is in (a month or so). I have had no problems with it, and parting with it is as difficult a thing as I will ever do. I will send pics if you are interested.
