Log Play Shelter

Okay, maybe it's a stretch that this topic is tractor related, but....

I just finished thinning out some overgrown woods, and have several "poles" left from some of the smaller trees I cut down - mostly 10' to 20' long and 1.5" to 3" round.

I'd like to use these to make some kind of temporary play shelter for my kids. Any ideas? Photos would be nice if anybody's made something like this before.

Heck, that sounds like a good idea.
Use the larger logs for the main supports and use some planks alternately to side it if you don't have enough to do the entire structure out of logs and poles.
It should look very cool and natural.

Not sure of your kids ages, possibly you could let their imagainations run wild about the project with your supervision.

I saw some small poles used for a roof that looked really good. I think they were cedar, so they don't rot very easily. What type of wood are you using?

The wood I have is random - sweetgum, red oak, and others. I was just going to saw the trunks up and burn it, but then thought I might as well save them and try to do something fun with them.

I thought of a teepee, and just cover it with a tarp. Or just some kind of lean-to out of the poles and side it with twigs or cover it with a tarp.

This is something we'd sort of just slap together (not looking to spend much time or money on it) and let them play with it for a couple of years. The kids are 7 and 5.

Archy, I think it's a great idea! I have 4 brothers, and when we were kids I think we built about 4 lean-to type huts. A couple of them were well enough done, that my brothers slept in them for Winter camp outs. Ours were made from trees that had died in the woods. We weren't allowed to cut as it wasn't our property. They didn't look like much, but were great fun. Keep us posted. Brian

look up cordwood building. could be a fun project. I am planning to make a cordwood sauna next year so i have been cutting and pealing logs.

Here is a tree house I built for our kids.

The problem with logs is when you start using them, it is hard to go to dimensional lumber, something to consider before you start.
