Hopefully this Conforms to the Rule!!!
Talk about getting the shaft, and not the propeller shaft! Last week I checked the King Kutter web site for local dealers because I was looking specifically for a 48 Brush Hog and a local reputable tractor Company here in NH was listed as a close dealer. Calling that number I instead reached a small used tractor equipment dealer in Londonderry NH who had their old telephone number. Inquiring about the KK brand, he went out to his lot he stated that he had a new 4 ft KK that he would sell me for $750.00. This sounded like what I was looking for. I decided to load the trailer and make the 50 mile pilgrimage in the pouring rain to check this out. On arrival, we went out to his yard (literally more like a junk yard) where he showed me a KK that had been sitting there for a lengthy period of time, there was rust on it and it was covered with leaves, however, it also had all the mounting hardware, prop shaft ect. wired to the body for assembly and the fluid @ oil and grease had never been added because of shipping, I figured it being Old/new it was probably still a good price and paid him cash for it. We loaded it on the trailer with his tractor in the rain storm and I went home.
On arrival at home I pulled a manual as well as a cut sheet from the Mfgr. Website and checked the model number with those on the chassis of the mower. Well! right on the tag it said 40 inch rotary cutter as well as the model number that matched to a 40 and not a 48 on the web site. I was upset for not checking the numbers before hand. Being a trusting person I took this person at his word. I immediately called him and he told me that he had measured it and it was 48? I measured it and found that side to side of the chassis and informed him that it was 441/4?
Over the course of the week, I called him a couple of times and suggested that I bring it back and look at two others he had. He was adamant that a 40 rotary cutter was considered a 4 footer. I begged to differ and called King Kutter Co. who confirmed what I knew to be true. They advised me that if the unit had sat around without fluids as this one, as well as the others the guy wanted me to look at, then there was a good chance of dried out seals and bearings.
I was pretty sure that I was going to just return this and buy new from a reputable dealer. I returned to his yard this past week, and prior to unloading my trailer he showed me the two other cutters of different make. They, being in the same condition as the one I had purchased were of no interest to me. I told the man I was dealing with, that I was instead going to buy a new one someplace else. He was again defensive, and stated that the one he had sold me was a 4 foot cutter. Here is the real kicker; he told me he was going to charge me $100.00 for his time and handling. Arguing about this ( while knowing I still had to get the unit off my trailer) I reluctantly negotiated him to $50.00 and left. This person evidently has no idea what this act will cost him. Yes, I should have more careful, even in the torrential rain and resolved it then. Lesson Learned!
The reputable tractor company will be notified that their old number is still listed by King Kutter, and this other company in NH is using it to scam people to buy his junk.

Not that it would do you much good but you could lodge a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

/ Literally got the Shaft!!! #4
would agree with the BBB route, wont help you but may help the next guy if he is looking into the companies background

i sell used equipment for a living and i believe 750 for a use cutter that size is about 350 to high no matter what condition its in i have been buying kk stuff that has wheathered but new no rust at a auction a 5 footer i sell for 500 to 600

but if i sell u something u will do all the checking to make sure what size it is and if u buy it then u own it

Do as much complaining as possible, BBB, anyone and everyone who will listen.

When telling everyone your story, don't malign the guy, stay with the facts and I'm pretty sure you'll save someone else from being hoodwinked. I do absolutely believe in 'what comes around, goes around'. We can never be sure how that eventual smack in the head may actually hit him...but it will hit him.

I think we've all been there at one time or another, and just because we may be right, doesn't mean the outcome will be fair. Getting everything back but $50 is cheap compared to a couple rips I've experienced. Life lessons can be more expensive. :D

Be sure to pay with a credit card next time in case you have to dispute the charge.

thats works sometimes but it can also get u into trouble when buying used equipment because i know in louisiana it is as is where is no warranty or gurantee unless the seller states there is. So if u stop payment on a credit card after u have already have it that is the piece u chose it is not the sellers fault u dont know what to look for .

sad thing is is that there are people out there who dont know any better and buy it because it is a good deal and then they are really screwed

One of the many reasons I only buy top branded equipment from an established dealer. There are some really good new and used dealers out there.

My brother will buy faded off brand stuff to save some money, but he is a lot better judge of equipment than I and it works for him.

I know that guy - he has a pretty good rep for doing exactly the kind of thing that the PO is talking about. And he's been exactly that way for 25 years or better.

Well........ lesson learned I guess.

FWIW..... I wouldn't expect any better from a tractor dealer who needs to have 'Honest' in the name of his tractor business.

I know you wanted to deal with an actual tractor dealer, but how much is a new 48" KK cutter at TSC ?

Best $50 you ever spent.
Always use the credit card so you can dispute if need be.

It looks like TSC's 4ft CountyLine is $849.99.

It looks like TSC is still offering 0% intrest for 12 months I think it is. If you go the finance route you need to make sure to tell the person ringing you up that you want it though as I didn't and when I got my bill I noticed I was charged 24.99% intrest. It did't matter to much as I paid the bill off.

Yes this guy does have an address on Mammoth rd. I am not sure if there are reputable dealers on that road also. I had to meet him at " The old farm " on Harvey Rd. Being in business myself, I was blown away by his attitude. That $50.00 will be more costly for him then me. My boss was going to look for a York rake, but, when he heard about this, refuses to consider it.

true, poor customer service will always come around to bite you in the butt

Instead of people hiring home inspectors, for these kind of dealers, we'll need to hire equipment inspectors, should be able to get one for $50!
