Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

Fallon, I forgot, what's the cutting width on your flail?

Vendor of the flail I'm looking at says 60hp min. My NX5510 is 55hp (46 pto). I may lose a little time on my first mowing, but subsequent mowings (shorter) ought to make up for that (and overall make up a lot of time over my 6' rotary).

[in response to Dave's last post]

I have a fair amount of trees. I'll be pushing it with a 7'+ flail; having hydraulic side shift is the mitigation.

I do mow in different patterns from time to time. Just a lot of uneven ground no matter how I look at it. I have done leveling on some really bad ruts (from skidders): those were dealt with earlier on with my B7800 and a 5' box blade - A LOT OF WORK! I'm pretty much making pasture as I go/can.

Since your shopping you should look at the HINIKER 6 foot towed flail crop shredder. It has no rear roller and the cutting height can be adjusted either manually with a ratchet screw jack or by a hydraulic cylinder. The CV joint allows for tight turns and backing up if needed.

Leon, wheels will tend to fall into various depressions/ruts.

Here's an example of my environment (it's actually one of the wider-open places- there's a dog in there!):

I have had the same AGL165 for two years, I mow a good bit of rough ground and have not had any problems. I wish you to best of luck with yours. Sometimes one small bad part can cause more than one big part to break.

I am really enjoying mowing with the flail. I like having it offset so the tires are always on cut grass. Makes a nice even cut! Every time I use it I gain some knowledge that helps me keep things smooth. I really appreciate all the tips I have read in this thread.

Yes, I had looked up that shredder. As noted, those wheels are going to be falling in depressions/holes/ruts that I have all over the place. The area in the picture I posted is reasonably smooth; I provided it to note that I have to work around a bunch of trees.

I upgraded my flail mower I got a Alamo SHD96 off of Gov Deals auction. The guy told me it was a 88", but when I measured it the cut is 96".

I was not sure if I was going to be able to pick it up without adding weight, but my tractor picked it up without any added weight. My tractor also spun it up just fine, but I had to order knives, but the Y knives for the Alamo are way less than the ducks foot knives / airplane wings on my Ford 917.

PS my tractor asked if it made its butt look wide.

Peruzzo Brush Bull 2200. Working width is 7.25'. Recomended HP is 70-110hp, the L4060 has 40. I definitely want more HP at times, but its adequate to get the job done going slow. My 32hp L3200 pulled the 7' Ford 917 ok as well. I appear to be a fan of going wide & slow. Although I don't go to slow as things aren't that thick most of the time. Colorado is dry so we dont have thick grass that really taxes HP. I probably would have a different opinion if I were back in Oregon or what not where they get lots of thick green stuff.

Yes, it makes the butt look wide. That Alamo seems identical to my SHD88 which makes a 7.5ft wide cut. I got mine at auction for pocket change.
