Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I should correct myself before someone jumps my case.
When I said, "Going forward means the grass is cut at the base like a rotary cutter", that's actually incorrect technically. The grass blades are cut several times by the flails in an arch. This is why the grass coming out appears to be chopped fine. With a rotary cutter, the grass is cut at the base but stays under the deck until it's fine enough to exhaust or be thrown out in clumps.

It can be pouring down rain and I can cut grass with the flail mower without clumps or significant build up under the housing. Try that with a rotary mower.

I have, 7' rear discharge finish mower behind our L3830. Mows just fine without clumps as long as you are mowing "lawn" length grass, not "hayfield" length grass.

I stay confused without thinking about forward & reverse rotation but that's the way my mower is running now. Thanks to all for the info. Until I get me a operators manual I'm somewhat lost at this flail mower stuff. So far I really like it but as I said maybe in another thread I'm keeping my finish mower and my rotary cutters. I'm not sure about the other mowers but the Mott 72 can run either forward or reverse and the knives have the cutting edges on both sides. If you just run it in one direction I guess you just turn the knives around once they are beyond sharpening.

I admit do not read every page of this thread but do keep dropping in it. No idea who's manual I read but think an Italian flail mower (boom model) that said to use the direction of rotation where the cutter was cutting the front side of the item meaning it was pushing what it was cutting towards the ground or away from the top of the cutter if it were like limbs or such so it would not pull it and jam the machine. Grass you ran it where the cutter rotation was backwards to the travel direction to keep the grass in there to cut as fine as it cut. Made sense to me. That boom mower had hyd reversing control for the direction and thus easy to change. My current boom mower does not and I plumbed it to rotate same direction as tire travel forward and it has worked fine.

Thank you Xfaxman for the info about the Husqvarna R322T AWD. I've looked at the link and it sounds great ($6K vs. $18K including a new tractor.)

Oh I see what they have to do with those "backward" cutting mowers. They have to add that Quasimodo hump on the back to deflect the debris down. Wasted metal and energy.

I got it. We'll forget about the forward or reverse rotation and just call it the right way and the wrong way.:cool2:

If it's cutting the grass that's the right way. If it's makes the grass taller that's the wrong way.

Be sure to use a torpedo bubble level and and place it on the top of the gearbox
to level the front of the flail mower before your first mowing.


With the shredding bars installed at thier lowest setting you will get a very fine clipping of any limbs and thick brush that will degrade quickly.
