I think most of this thread is weird. Talking about groups with different skills and not being able to stay up for 24 hours to guard the property. Too many movies?

Ever watch the news?

Society crumbles in a matter of days. Remember Katrina? Once authority and/or basic services disappear, chaos begins. You are quickly on your own.

It doesn't take nuclear weapons to create social unrest, looting, lack of food and other risks to your safety.

I was trying to remember... Seems like there is a 5 day supply of food in the chain - after that you better have something in reserve.

I have had this discussion with some friends , first if it gets bad , you can only go as far as your fuel tank allows you . Gas stations will be out . Then you need a place to go . I live in the balto/ washington corridor . Its bad enough with traffic , now throw panic on top of that and you are going no where fast . The only way out of this area is by boat .

You have apparently never lived thru an extended utility outage that had no power, fuel or fresh foods for weeks, nor have you had to band together to keep looters out of storm devistated areas. Some of us have. In the 90's me and a buddy drive over to my parents house after the big storm ? Charlie?

Roads were not passable. We ditched his car and walked a couple miles thru downed poles, trees, and roofs in peoples yards.

If you don't like our swimming pool here in this thread why did you come in here just to pee in it?

If the idea of being storm prepared makes you itchy and uncomfortable.. Why read and post negatives??

Given that fuel could become scarce, your generators may last only a few days. Solar generators 1800W can be found for under $2K. I've got my eye on a 4000W model that is not cost prohibitive. These would provide basic power for indefinite periods - which would be a major factor in your quality of life.

Further, generators make noise (attract undesirable folks) while solar generators are completely silent.

Actually I don't think there's ever been a movie made that accurately depicts how fast our lives could be turned upside down...if you think the gov. or other powers that be are going to protect you...you are unfortunately mistaken...just ask all the business owners that have their stores looted every time there is a minor disaster or racial skirmish etc.,etc...

Even in a non-worse case scenario...things can get out of hand very quickly...those that are prepared will be preyed on by those that don't...they won't last long...:D

Nope. I just pay attention. Studying history is good for a lot more than trivial facts.

I like this thread as I probably spend too much time speculating on what to do when things go pear-shaped. I've got a spare bedroom for a pantry, load up on stuff when it's on sale and date it so you can rotate it. #10 cans of stuff from the restaurant supply places keep and stack well, paper goods keep indefinitely. To get an idea of how long things will last, mark the date that you open something so when it runs out you'll know, like a 3 pound can of coffee lasts 41 days, you can get a mean average of how much to have on hand.
It's difficult to say what the most likely threat will be; a CME is a certainty somewhere down the line, an airburst nuke from Iran is probably around 85% within the next seven years. That will knock out the power grid, and it will not be restored for years, as there are no spares for a lot of substation critical components, and sourcing them will be difficult without manufacturing capabilities.
The biggest problem I'd face is being alone here. As mentioned earlier, you can't keep watch 24/7 and defend all points, plus forage. With a good group you can defend against the inevitable invaders that will fan outwards once their gibs-me-dat cards don't work anymore.
If there was a nuclear exchange, then all bets are off, depending on how close it is. I just watched an excellent movie from the 80's called Threads, about a strike in England, it paints a pretty bleak picture a good ten years afterward.
